    HELP!   HELP!  HELP!  HELP!

The Drama Class needs YOUR HELP for Uncle Phil’s Diner!  This will be the 9th and 10th grade play for the 2007-2008 school year.  It will take place on Saturday, May 3rd from 6-8:00 pm.  The students are very excited!
We need you to help spread the word and help sell tickets.  Tickets are already in the office, or you can approach a 9th or 10th grader.  We have promotional flyers for all the churches we represent.  Come by the Applewood office and get some for your church’s bulletin boards.  Make sure you get your own family’s tickets first, then pick up tickets for friends and neighbors, but please collect the money first.  Checks can be made payable to Applewood.  Please do so early so we can have an idea of the amount of food to buy and number of tables the students will be serving.  We are hoping around 160 people come to our Diner that night.
Uncle Phil’s Diner takes place in 1956, so we encourage everyone to come dressed in their 1950’s costume.  You might get the best dressed prize!  This will be a FUN FAMILY night of great diner food (hamburgers or hotdogs, Root Beer floats, ice cream with Oreos or Sugar Wafers) and 50’s style entertainment by the Desoto’s live band performers.  Yes, there really is a live band coming to perform that night and they are really good!
Please keep these students in your prayers as they are preparing their costumes, memorizing scripted lines, preparing improvisations and learning 50’s songs to sing and dance to.  Pray they will do well, but also enjoy this experience.
The following is a list of helpers and some items we still need.  If you can donate, please let Mrs. Dharma León know at 829-2869 or e-mail me at carlosl11861@yahoo.com.

J       Hopefully we are done with the flu bug around here.  Last week we had an average of 9 students out, 2 teachers, and one administrator. L The snow day gave us all a chance to take a badly needed rest.  Please remind your children to cover their mouths when they sneeze and cough, and keep their hands away from their faces. Mrs. Young

S.T.A.N.D. (Sedalia Taking A New Direction) – (I was a week ahead of myself.)  The students from STAND will be coming to talk to our students about staying away from drugs this Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the sanctuary.  As always, parents are welcome to attend.

Help With Yearbook – So far we have not gotten any volunteers to help with the yearbook.  So Pam Meusborn has set a couple in school work days.  Friday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 18 we are asking any parents that are available to come from 12:30 – 3:30 to help work on the Yearbook.  If you can be there call Pam at 827-7038.  If we do not get any help, we will cancel the yearbook for this year.

Event Calendar - Parents and students are encouraged to check the event calendar regularly to be sure they are up to date on any changes in dates or times of events, especially sports.  Players should also check Mr. Lansing’s blog prior to games to ensure that you know the proper directions for the games.

Sports Fees - There are still some families that have not paid their basketball participation fees or contacted Bill for arrangements.  The sports program needs these funds in order to continue to function this season.  Prompt payment is appreciated.  ACS students - $55, Non-ACS students - $65.

Literature Festival – A field trip is being scheduled for Grades 4 – 6 on March 11 to the Literature Festival held at UCM. More info to follow.

Student Looking for Help If you have any old appliances, vehicles, or scrap metal that you want to get rid of, please contact Holly Clancy at 547-3956.  They would be willing to dispose of it for you so that they can help pay for Jamiann’s tuition.

Dangerous Books!  - Conversations with God and Conversations with God for Teens, written by Neale D. Walsch.. They sound harmless enough by their titles alone. The books have been on the New York Times best sellers list for a number of weeks.  The author answers various questions asked by kids using the "voice of God". However, the "answers" that he gives are not Bible-based and go against the word of God.

  • Week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 1

    Hi ACS Families!

We had a fun time at the Stuco (Student Council) Carnival this Saturday night!  Thanks to the Kjar family we added a new booth – the bowling game.  The gold fish were a hit again this year.  Mr. Boatright, Coach Crosier, Mrs. Eberly and Mrs. Blake proved that they could hold their own against our smart fifth graders in the ACS version of “Are You As Smart As a Fifth Grader”.  And the Pie-In-The-Face contest once again was a big money maker.  (We will post a total next week).  Thanks to Nate, Cleo, Raymond, Kinser, and Mrs. Thomas for being such good sports.  Hope you all got that pudding out of your hair!  The Carnival was not only a great time but it added to the funds the Student Council uses to go great things in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  For Christmas, the Student Council voted to put some of that money to adopting a family at the Show Me Christian Youth Home.  The following is an excerpt of the letter that they sent to the Student Council:

“Once again our hearts were touched by your love in action as a school and individually. . . Thank you for being a part of it all by reaching out so generously with your lovely gifts for the Watkins family.  It means so much to each of our young people that they are truly loved.”

We have posted the letter and the cards that the children wrote on the wall outside the office.  My thanks to the Student Council and their parents that worked in the concession stand.  You did a great job!

    Mrs. Y

Fund Raising Dinner Total – The School Board had a meeting this last Monday.  We wanted everyone to know the total income (after expenses) from the Fund Raising dinner last November.  Our total was $8,444.10.  In addition to the monetary gain, we have had an increase in newspaper coverage (for our school and sports teams) since that night, as well as many more people asking about our school.  All in all it was a great success!

Consideration For Reapplication – Forms went out Friday with your students.  Please have them back as soon as possible as the school board is already making budget plans for next year.

Annual ACS Carnival – Saturday, January 26 in the ROC.  There are games like the cake walk, football throw, and duck pond.  Tickets cost $0.50 each and each game takes between 1 – 3 tickets.  The concession stand will have pizza, chili, and hot dogs, as well as sweet treats.   Money has been poring in for the Pie-In-The-Face competition.  Only the Top Five will get a pie in the face.  So far Kinser Hogan is in the lead with $29.00.  We will take money right up until the last minute on Saturday night.  Individuals who find themselves in the Top 5 and do not want to get a pie in the face, have the choice of buying themselves out by matching the price that is down on them.  Then we will auction off to the highest bidder, the honor of “giving” the pie to one of the top five.

Spirit Day! – So that we can save energy for the carnival on Saturday, Friday is declared Pajama Day!  Please be sure to wear shoes to school (you can bring slippers to change into).

    Dear ACS Parents,

The Annual ACS Carnival is Saturday, January 26 in the ROC.  It is a fund raising event put on by Stucco (Student Council).  There are games like the cake walk, football throw, and duck pond.  Fun and prizes for everyone!  Your student may even go home with a live gold fish!  There is also face painting and a moon bounce.  The concession stand is ready to feed you dinner or a quick snack.   The Pie-In-The-Face competition begins this Monday.  Students are encouraged to bring their spare change in to put money on a friend or favorite teacher to get a pie in the face.  (I will be contacting parents before any large sum of money is donated, especially if they have your wallet in hand J).  I have heard rumors that this year’s entertainment is the game “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?”.  So come on out for a night of fun and fellowship.  Be sure to bring your friends!

Welcome to 2 new students!  Robbie Nelson and Kelby Shive (both in grade 8) joined us last Friday. We are glad you are here!

ACS Scholarship – The school board will be offering a scholarship for the coming second semester.  Parents interested in applying for the scholarship please pick up an application in the office.

Sewing Machines Needed – The Life Skills class (juniors & seniors) need to borrow a few sewing machines for approximately two weeks.  If you have a sewing machine you are willing to lend the school please contact Paula Crosier at 826-3747.

Paper Towels – We are running out of paper towels!  Please send in one roll with each student this week.  Thanks!

Change in Report Cards – Second quarter (first semester) ended Jan. 9.  Report cards will go out Wed, Jan. 16.  The Academic Committee felt that it was taking too long to get the report cards out to students by entering the grades onto the computer and printing them out. So we have decided to go back and do things the old fashioned way.  Students will receive a hard copy report card written on by each of their teachers.  Report cards will need to be returned to the office no later than Wed, Jan 23.  Students who lose their report card will be charged a $10 replacement fee.

    Have a great week!

    Mrs. Young

  • Week of January 7 - 11

    Dear ACS Families,

Wednesday I was visiting with the students in my Bible class about the holiday season.  Many of them remarked that “Christmas just didn’t feel like Christmas this year”.  So we examined what things made Christmas, Christmas.  Here are the things they came up with:

T     Holiday decorations – decorating a tree and making the house look different for the season.

T     A special meal on Christmas Day

T     Doing something special on Christmas – whether it is visiting the relatives or spending family time together doing something extra fun.

T     Snow (can’t do much about this one).

T     Going to church on Christmas Eve and/or reading the Christmas story.

T     Having all of your family together.  This was very important.

The students reflected that this year the holiday season seemed busier, and that some of the above traditions were neglected, which made Christmas not feel right.  Interestingly, not a single student mentioned gifts as something positive or negative to the Christmas experience.  What I deduced from this discussion was that traditions were very important to the students.  As a parent I understand that all of those traditions take valuable time but from the students’ perspective it was those very things that made the Christmas holiday special.

I too was having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year.  I made a point of attending a Christmas Eve service, and it made all the difference to me.  Taking the time to quiet my mind and let the Holy Spirit infuse my heart with awe once again, how God became flesh and dwelled among us.  As we put away the Christmas decorations this year, let us make a resolution to remember to keep Christmas special for our children and ourselves and never let it become – just another day.

Teacher Meeting – Monday, Jan. 7 immediately following school.

Book Mobile books – The last few months the students have enjoyed having the book mobile come to school and getting to check out books.  Students K – 5, keep their books in their classrooms but 6 – 12 are allowed to take them home.  The difficult part of this system is that all of the books are checked out to ACS and there is no record of what student takes what book.  We will rectify that in the future.  We are missing a few books since Nov.  If we do not find them the school will need to purchase them.  The book mobile comes the last Friday of the month.  Please ask your child to bring the books they checked out in Nov. to the office by Monday Jan. 21.

              Missing books:

The Europa Conspiracy – Tim LaHaye

Wait till Helen Comes:  A ghost story – May Downing Hahn

The Mystery of Cabin IslandFranklin W. Dixon

Student Council Carnival – Mark your calendars!  The annual carnival is right around the corner.  Fun and prizes for everyone!  Friends are welcome.  The Pie-In-The-Face competition will begin on Monday.  So bring in your spare change to put money on a friend or favorite teacher to get a pie in the face.

Choir – Instrumental Influence is starting up a choir for homeschool students and ACS was invited to join.  An informational meeting will be held at Instrumental Influence on Tues. Jan. 22 at 9:00 am.  The choir will meet on Thursday mornings from 9:30 – 10:45 for ages 7 – 12 and 11:00 – 12:15 for ages 13 – 18.  There will be a performance on April 27 at Cornerstone Church.  For further information call 827-3004.

Concession Stand Workers – The list of workers for the concession stand for the basketball season went home with the students Friday.  If you can not make your scheduled work time please do your best to change with another parent.  Gay Otten from the office will be calling to remind you a couple days in advance from your work time.

Report Cards – Second quarter (first semester) will be ending Jan. 9.  Report cards will go out Jan. 14.

Science Projects – Science projects will be on display throughout the week.  Parents are invited to come to the AWANA room and see them on display.

Boxtops for Education – We just received a check the other day for $191.20 from Boxtops and it reminded me to remind all of you about the small fund raisers that are ongoing at ACS.  We are still taking cell phones, collecting Boxtops for Education, and Student Council is taking aluminum cans.  Every little bit helps!

    Yours In Christ,

    Pamela Young
