2008 Bible, Academic, and Fine Arts Competition

For the 2007-2008 school year, Applewood Christian School has joined the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS).  Being a part of the this national organization as well as the Missouri Association of Christian Schools (MACS) provides Applewood students, teachers, and administrators with a number of opportunities one of which is the opportunity to VOLUNTARILY participate in the Mid-America Association of Christian Schools (MAACS)  2008 Bible, Academic, and Fine Arts Competition.  Taking advantage of this opportunity assists students in developing and utilizing their God-given gifts and abilities to the glory of God while competing with students from a ten state area.

This competition is quite different from the one in which Applewood participated last year.  The MAACS event consists of three event dates which are as follows:

         February 26-Academic Testing Day

         Location:  Applewood Christian School

         Grades 4-12

         March 12-14-Junior/Senior High Performance Event

         Location:  Tri-City Christian School-Independence, MO)

         Grades 7-12

         April 3-4-Elementary Performance Event

         Location:  Tri-City Christian School-Independence, MO

         Grades 4-6

         *April 8-10-AACS National Competition

         Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC

         (Top-ranking high school students only)

A great variety of individual and group competition categories within five major areas (Bible, Art, Speech, Music, and Academics) will be available.  At this point it is important to know the students who are INTERESTED (any interest at all-a commitment is not required at this time) and their categories of interest.  Individuals may enter more than one category, however Applewood is limited in some areas as to the number of entries we may send in each category.

Please list your student(s) name(s) if  he or she is a student in one of the eligible grades (4-12).  Then select each students areas of interest or select “Does not wish to participate.”  Again, participation in this event is totally voluntary, however EVERY form needs to be returned whether the student is participating or not.

As with any special program offered to Applewood students, it will require “the body” working together to carry it out in a way that glorifies God and provides the best possible experience to our students.  I am praying now that God will call forth the workers needed and will give them a willingness to offer their time and talents in helping out with this program.  Please prayerfully consider how the Lord might be calling you to participate-whether you have a child entering the competition or not.  Please note if you are willing to help in one of the following areas:

In closing, it is very important that every student, parent, and teacher be given the opportunity to be involved in this event. To assure that everyone has received this information we will be keeping track of the forms as they are returned.  If your form is not returned by the due date, you will be personally contacted to confirm that you did receive the form.  (Again, we do not want to miss anyone.)  Please help us in conserving our precious resources---volunteers’ time---by promptly responding.  The survey portion of this form (page 2) should be placed in the box of Brenda Allcorn located in the ROC office or the needed information emailed to Brenda (dallcorn@iland.net) NO LATER THAN MONDAY, DECEMBER 3.

Please keep this event and the students and workers involved in your prayers.  May our entire body grow in its unity and usefulness to the Lord through this ministry to our students.

    In His service,

    Brenda Allcorn

    MAACS School Coordinator

NOTE:  To avoid confusion and misinformation please direct all questions regarding the MAACS competiton at this time to Brenda Allcorn (287-2736) or dallcorn@iland.net.  In the near future, we hope to add category coordinators who will field questions in their specific areas.  Again, at this time, direct questions only to the MAACS School Coordinator, Brenda Allcorn.

  • Week of Dec. 10 - 14

    Dear ACS Families,

We had a fun day Friday!  It looked like Christmas around here with so many wonderful costumes!  You can see the pictures Mrs. Lansing took by going to http://public.fotki.com/spbrh1983, the password is ACS.  This is my husband’s web site where he stores all the pictures the Young family takes of ACS events, especially sports.  The pictures are put in folders by event.

One more week before Christmas break!  Melissa Backe has been counting down the days before break (as well as days left to shop) for me.  Teachers will be busy finishing up classes so students may have a few tests this week.  By Wednesday all classes should be finished up.  There will be NO homework on Thursday as ALL students are required to be at dress rehearsal practice from 10 – 1.  Please be sure your student brings a lunch in case they get hungry.  The performance of “The 12 Plays of Christmas” is Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.  Students gr. 4 – 12 are asked to be at school by 5:30.  Students gr. 1 – 3 need to be at school at 6:30.  Each family is asked to bring a plate of cookies or bars to share.

As most of you know, Mr. Nelson is getting married on Dec. 14 at 2:00 at Maplewood Church.   All ACS families are invited to attend.   In lieu of a traditional shower for Mr. Nelson and his fiancé Joy, ACS is going to have an old fashioned “pounding”.  A “pounding” is a custom dating back to Quaker founding days: When a couple would move into the neighborhood, the neighbors would get together and bring a pound of sugar, flour, or whatever, to help stock up the new neighbors cupboards. Also done for new married couples.  We are asking ACS families to bring a pound (16 oz), of something to help stock our newlywed’s pantry, to the Christmas program.  Following the program, we will have the couple open their gifts and cards.

A couple of students approached me last week and asked if the students could adopt a family for Christmas.  So ACS has adopted a family from the community who will not have Christmas this year without our help.  Students are asked to bring in money for this family by next Friday.  We will have a jar in the office to collect the student’s donations.

Each year parents are very generous in their desire to show their appreciation to the teachers.  And each year the teachers have asked that instead of gifts that parents would give donations to a charity.  This year ACS is going to partner with KDRO and support the troops in Iraq.  A list of the supplies the troops need went home with the students on Friday.  Each building will have a collection box for students to drop off supplies.

Don’t forget your exchange gift and snack to share on Friday!

Lunch Monitor needed!  We are in need of a lunch monitor for Wednesdays to watch the students.  You would need to be available from 11:15 – 12:15.  See Mrs. Young if you can help.

School Christmas Party Day – Dec. 14.  Students will have a fun morning exchanging gifts, playing games, and doing crafts.  School will get out at noon!  Each family is asked to bring in a snack for the students to share.  If your last name begins with A – M, please bring in a sweet snack.  If your last name begins with N – Z, please bring in a healthy snack.  Students should have their exchange gift wrapped with the name of the student written on it.

Golden Compass concern – A few concerned parents wanted me to pass on to the ACS parents a couple of great web sites that give information on the movie “The Golden Compass”.

Snow Day Rules To find out whether or not school has been cancelled due to snow, listen to Spirit FM (107.7 and 89.7 ), KSIS  (1050 AM ), or check the web site.  Homework for that day will be posted on each teacher’s blog by 10:00 am.  Homework given on snow days are due the following school day.

  • Week of Dec. 3 - 7

    Dear ACS Families,

Did you get a chance to check out the Sedalia News Journal’s article about the ACS fund raising dinner?  It was in the Nov. 21 edition.  It was a great article that represented both WallBuilders and ACS well.  We have posted the two articles about ACS on the bulletin boards in both buildings.  Also on the bulletin boards is a copy of the latest Bulletin, as well as minutes from the School Board, the Student Council, and the Family Club.  Check it out!

Thanks to all the parents who have brought their students to drama rehearsals for the upcoming Christmas program on Dec. 13.  Mrs. Leon is cooking up something really special (as always) that will involve EVERY student at ACS.  I can’t wait to see it!  We are planning to have an intermission that evening so we are asking each family to bring a plate of cookies or bars to the event.  Also Mrs. Leon is still missing some props and costumes.  I have attached her list at the bottom of this bulletin.  If you can help her in any way, please give her a call.  Dress rehearsal will be Dec. 13 from 10:00am – 1:00pm.  Students will not have homework that day due to the performance and the program.

Mid Term Reports will go out Wednesday.

Lunch Monitor needed!  We are in need of a lunch monitor for Wednesdays to watch the students.  You would need to be available from 11:15 – 12:15.  See Mrs. Young if you can help.

Spirit Day this Friday!  We are WAY over due for a spirit day.  Everyone is looking forward to the holidays.  Come to school dressed as your favorite Christmas character or come wearing red and green!

Treats for the Troops – Every year the teachers, in lieu of a gift, ask that families donate towards a worthy cause.  This year we are sending supplies to the troops.  Letters explaining this went home with the students last Friday.

  • Week of 26 - 30

    Dear ACS Families,

Did you read the newspaper on Thanksgiving day?  Applewood Christian School made the cover of the Sedalia Democrat!  We had 3 pictures and a wonderful article about our annual Feast in the paper.

And what a feast it was!  The food was delicious, the entertainment was great, and everyone had a good time.  We were pleased to see most of the alumni, from class 2003 on down, there to join in the festivities.  Everyone had an enjoyable time.

Thanks to Mrs. Leon for all the wonderful drama productions.  Our guests were both entertained and received a great message.  Thanks to the elementary teachers and Mrs. Blake for the decorations.  Thanks to the moms who cooked turkeys for us.  Thank you to all the room moms who spent the morning with our children doing crafts, games and cooking in the kitchen.  Thanks to Mr. Boatright for washing a mountain of pans in the kitchen.  And thank you to Mrs. Crosier for running the kitchen so smoothly and efficiently and making sure we were all well fed.  Another event well done!

  • Week of Nov. 19 - 21

    Dear ACS Families,

The fund raising dinner was a marvelous success!  I was at the door thanking people for coming, as the guests were departing, and many of them had wonderful things to say about the event.

One guest had this to say about the performance by the junior high:  “WOW!”  Our thanks goes out to our wild and crazy drama teacher, Mrs. Leon for all her creativity and patience.  Thanks to Mrs. Blake for her drawings of the “body”.  And thanks to Rhiannon Crosier (gr. 10), our resident dancer, for choreographing the dance movements that looked so cool in the dark.  And of course, a big thanks to grades 6 – 8 for their hard work and willingness to perform.  It was amazing!

High school students, you did an excellent job serving!  Not a single broken dish.  I know the guests were as impressed as I was. J

Thanks to Mrs. Christopherson for running the kitchen.  For Mr. & Mrs. David Walker for doing the cooking and for Ethan Sarver & Nan Hutcheson for helping in the kitchen.  We are in Maplewood’s debt.

Thanks to Matt Boatright our MC and Jordan Liesemeyer, our alumni speaker.  You both did a great job!

Parents, thank you for the hard work of finding guests to attend, following up with them, setting your table, bringing dessert, being hosts for the evening, and praying for the event.  You made it enjoyable for those who attended.

Thanks to Debra Marsh for putting the event together and for the super pamphlet on ACS that we will be using for years to come.

And lastly, thanks to our Father in Heaven, who continues to provide for our every need.  I have not had a chance to look inside the envelopes and see how much we raised but I promise to have an update by the next bulletin.  I know that the dinner will bring ACS more than just monetary benefits.  Above all else I pray that the event glorified our God and Savior.

Annual Thanksgiving Feast – This Wednesday!  Performances begin at 11:30 and dinner is served at noon.  If you didn’t get to see the junior high performance of the “Body of Christ” Saturday night, now is your chance!  Room Moms, please be at school by 8:00.  Teachers, I need to know if you will not be in school that day or if you need to give a test.  Turkey cookers, please bring in the turkey cut up and ready to go that morning, as well as the drippings.  Students are dismissed as soon as their clean up chores are done.

    No school Friday, November 23!

Christmas Gift Exchange – Tomorrow students will pick a name of the student they are to buy a gift for.  Please encourage your students to be excited about whosever name they pick.  Please stay within the monetary limits in buying gifts:  Elementary students $5.00, Junior High $7.00, and Senior High $10.00.

  • Week of 12-16 Nov

    Dear ACS Families,

I can’t believe that this is the week of our big fund raising dinner. To be honest, Debbie Marsh and I will be thrilled to have it over.  It has been a lot of work for us and for all of you.  I pray that the fruits of our labor open up many doors of opportunity for our school.  It is also my hope that each year we can do one large fund raiser instead of ten little ones to raise the money we need.  Continue to pray for the success of this event.

Parents, please be at the ROC no later than 5:30 to set your table and be available to greet your guests as they arrive.

High schoolers your class on serving will be Wednesday during Bible class.  Mrs. Christopherson will be running it.  You will need to be at the event by 5:00.  Your uniform for the evening is black or blue slacks and a white shirt.  Wear comfortable shoes, you will spend the night on your feet.

Grades 6 – 8, you will need to be there by 5:30 to get dressed.  After the performance, we will have pizza and drinks for you in the AWANA room.  The Wassams will be watching the students.

Parent Teacher Conferences are tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 12 at 6:00pm in the ROC.  Parents will check in at the door to pick up your child’s report card.  The report card has their teachers listed beside the course title.  The teachers will be sitting at tables in alphabetical order around the gym.  They each have two seats located at their table.  The conferences work at a first-come-first-served basis.  Watch your student’s teachers.  When you see that the seats are empty – jump into them!  Please make a point of seeing each of your child’s teachers.  It helps to work with someone that you can put a face to.  We ask that students NOT accompany parents to the conferences.  If you need child care, older students will be available in the AWANA room to watch them.

Teachers:  Be sure to have your 3 X 5 cards ready.  Feel free to use one card for a student you have more than once.  Please turn in any cards to me at the end of the evening.  The Family Club will have dinner available for us around 5:00 if you want to hang out after school and get work done.

Student Council (Stucco) Meeting – Wednesday after school in the youth room.

Annual Thanksgiving Feast – Next Wednesday!  Sheets went home asking how many family members and guests will be attending.  All are welcome!  The event will start at 11:30 with some performances and dinner will be served at noon.  Students do their clean up chores immediately following the dinner and then are dismissed for Thanksgiving break.

Field Trip for Grades K – 5 – Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 1:15 at SFCC to see the play “Punch and Judy”.  Parents, please meet in the SFCC parking lot at 12:45.  Cost is $1.00 for parents and students, teachers are free.  Please pick up your students at 2:15.

Play Opportunity for Everyone – The Sedalia Middle School children are putting on a rehearsal play of "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Liberty Center on Thursday, November 29, 10 a.m.  If you would like to go, please call Mrs. Tiehes (pronounced Tee ez) at 829-6534 for reservations, before Nov. 21.  Remember to mention you are from Applewood Christian School.  They are putting on the rehearsal play for the area schools only.  Admission is $2 per person.

    Pamela Young

  • Week of Nov. 5 - 9

    Dear ACS Families,

It has been amazing the “firsts” Applewood has had this year.  This weekend our soccer team participated in the Mid America Association of Christian Schools regional tournament.  They were entered in the A division which is for small schools.  The last time we participated in this tournament was in 2004 and I believe we got fourth place.  This weekend our team won the tournament!  The following awards were also received:

All Tournament Award :  Jeff Walker & Kolby Gabbert

              Sportmanship Award:  Logan Austin

MVP (from among all players that participated):  David DeMasters

Congratulations boys!  Congratulations Mustangs, Coach Young, Coach Lansing, and Coach Wedemeyer for a spectacular end to a great season!  God has truly been faithful to this little school called Applewood!

We are less than two weeks and counting away from our big fund raising dinner.   I hope that if you have not started praying for this event that you begin to do so today.  I will be calling this week with the final names for your list.  Please be sure you have spelled them correctly.  I am very excited to see what God is going to do through this event!

High schoolers you will be taking a class on serving next week so that you will be prepared for what is expected of you that night.  Your uniform for the evening is black or blue slacks and a white shirt.  Wear comfortable shoes, you will spend the night on your feet.

Grades 6 – 8, you should have your attire by now.  You will need to wear an all black long-sleeved shirt (nothing with a hood), all black pants (no stripes on side), and non skid black socks.  After your performance you will be dismissed to the AWANA room, where dinner will be waiting for you.

Fall Sports Awards Event – Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:00pm.  Players from all the ACS soccer and volleyball teams are encouraged to attend with their families and friends.  We are asking that each family bring a dessert to share.

School Photos – Mr. Greer will be doing school photos on Nov. 7.  Your child went home with an order form last Friday.  Please be sure they bring it in Wednesday with a check to cover the amount of the photos you are ordering.  Younger siblings are welcome to come in and get their pictures taken as well.

Annual Thanksgiving Feast – It is almost time for the Feast!  This is a time where the entire student body gets a chance to cook for their family and friends.  All are welcome!  The event will start at 11:30 with some performances and dinner will be served at noon.  Students do their clean up chores immediately following the dinner and then are dismissed for Thanksgiving break.  We will be sending home a sheet asking how many guests we can expect from your family.

There is limited seating for parents and teachers, please let Mrs. Cormican (826-0184) know if you wish to attend.

  • Week of Oct. 29 - Nov. 2

Dear ACS Families,                                                                                             I think yesterday was the longest day of my life but it was another first for Applewood Christian School.  ACS hosted our first ever sports tournament.  Six volleyball teams played from 8:00am until almost 8:00pm.  It was a long day for the girls and their families.  The great news was that the ACS Varsity Volleyball team won the second place position and the Junior Varsity team took home the Sportsmanship Trophy!  As for the concession stand, the Family Club kept those girls and their fans fed for 12 hrs.  We are all anxious to see how much funds the event brought in for our school.  Thanks to Darla Lansing & Kathy Greer for getting it organized, Bill Lansing for organizing the officials and running the event, Gay Otten for keeping things moving in the concession stand, and for the parents who volunteered their time to line judge, keep books, run the clock, or work in the concession stand.  What a great end to the volleyball season!

Fund Raising Dinner – As of yet, we have only had about 6 families turn in their guest list.  Debbie Marsh will be contacting each family this week.  It is essential that you get your guest list in this week!  Most importantly, please be in prayer for the success of this event.  We pray that this event will make a difference in the lives of many people in our community.

Soccer MAACS Tournament – Thursday, Nov. 1 to Sat., Nov. 3.  Soccer players, be sure to talk with your teachers about work you will be missing.  It will be due on Monday!  Also, check Mr. Lansing’s blog for additional details.

Fall Sports Awards Event – Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:00pm.  Players from all the ACS soccer and volleyball teams are invited to attend with their families and friends.  We are asking that each family bring a dessert to share.

First Quarter Grades – This Wednesday marks the end of the first quarter.  Students have all your work into your teachers by this time.

Parent Teacher Conferences – Monday, Nov. 12 at 6:00pm in the ROC.  First quarter grade cards and student schedules will be available for parent’s to pick up that evening.  This is an opportunity for parents to visit their child’s teachers and see how their child is doing in class.

Teacher Evaluations – Teacher evaluations for the parent’s to fill out were given to parents this week.  Visit with your students about their classes and prayerfully consider your answers as you evaluate the overall education that your student is receiving this year.  Please have them to the office by Nov. 5.  Also, students will be given an opportunity to fill out their own evaluations this Wednesday in school.

PLAN test – Sophomores only Thursday, November 29 at 9:00A.M.

Student Council (Stucco) Meeting – Next Wednesday after school in the youth room.

SSLC Food Drive – The Student Council is in need of a bit of help this Monday at 4:00.  As part of the Sedalia Student Leadership Council, ACS student council members will be joining with youth from Smith-Cotton and Sacred Heart in collecting canned food for Open Door Ministries.  Our soccer players have an important practice for their upcoming tournament that evening.  Junior High students who would be willing to help go door to door with the rest of the student council members, or would like to help box food as it comes in, would be greatly appreciated.  Parents who are interested in driving would also be helpful.  Last year it took the students about 2 hrs.  If you are interested in helping tomorrow call/see Uriah.

Eye Screening – Dr. Liesemeyer will be doing eye exams on the students on Nov. 7.

School Photos – Mr. Greer will be doing school photos on Nov. 7.

Teacher Meeting – Monday after school in the youth room.

Room Mother’s Meeting – Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 2:30 in the Green room in the ROC.  We will be talking about upcoming school parties.

    Future Dates:

Nov. 21 – Annual Thanksgiving Feast – Students prepare a Thanksgiving meal for family and friends.  We will have entertainment and a time of fellowship.  Students are dismissed early, after clean up is done.

              Nov. 22 & 23 – Thanksgiving break.  No school.

Dec. 13 – ACS Christmas Program in the evening.

Dec. 14 – School Christmas party.  Students dismissed at noon!

  • Week of Oct. 22 - 26

    Dear ACS Families,

By now you should have received a letter in the mail from Debra Marsh outlining the host family’s responsibilities the night of the Fund Raising Dinner.  I have had several questions asked, and I realize now that I have not done a good job painting a picture of how the event will flow.  Let me do that now.

Each family at ACS will be the host of their own table.  You are responsible for filling that table with guests.  Please turn in the names of your guests to the office on Monday, Oct. 22 making sure all names are spelled correctly (our seating cards will be taken from your lists).  If you were not able to fill your entire table we will fill those spots for you.

Let me remind you of the 3 kinds of people we are interested in you inviting:

    1.    Those individuals that would be interested in partnering with us financially or giving a one time donation.

    2.    Those individuals that have children and are interested in what Christian education has to offer.

    3.    Members of our community that have heard about ACS but need to know more about what we are doing.

The night of the dinner, we would like the host couple to arrive at 5:30 to set their table and be available to help with any last minute preparations as well as be there to greet your guests as they arrive.

In the letter you received this week, Debbie requested that you bring 8 place settings from home to set your table with.  When Debbie researched the cost of renting enough tableware and linens, it was going to cost almost $1,000.  She and I felt that we were not being good stewards with the money God was giving us to spend that kind of money on plates and napkins.  We got the idea of bringing place settings from home from Cornerstone Church that recently hosted a fund raising dinner.  It worked very well for them.  We are suggesting that you bring 8 of the following:  dinner plates, bread plates, glasses, forks, butter knives, spoons, and an additional utensil based on the dessert you are serving.  If you do not have 8 of each of these items, let us know and we will ask someone else to bring in a set for you.  Bring them to the ROC that night in a cardboard box.  We will store the boxes in a classroom and you will bring them home in that same box.

We will be decorating the table that night for you.  Each table will be decorated with brown paper covering, raffia, and pumpkins.  Each person at your table will have a place card.  Feel free to move these cards around your table when you get there that night so that each guest is comfortable where they are seated.

Against the wall we will have 3 tables set up.  Please encourage your guests to check out these tables.

    1)    A WallBuilders table, where our speaker will have books, posters, etc. available for purchase.

    2)    A curriculum table, where we will display all the books ACS student’s use.

    3)    A question & answer table for people to get more information about ACS.

We will open the evening with a welcome and a prayer for the meal.  Students in grades 9 – 12 will serve the tables with platters of chicken, rice, and green beans, and baskets of rolls.  At your table, pass around the food “family style”.   We will have pitchers of water and ice tea at each table as well.  Be sure to “visit” with your guests and introduce the people on your table to each other.  You are to bring a dessert to share.  If you don’t bake, that’s fine, just pick up a pie at Perkins or cupcakes from The Cake Lady.  Place them on your own serving plate and viola!  You have a dessert.  Feel free to serve your dessert when you feel your guests are ready.

After dinner, Mrs. Leon and her drama class will be presenting a wonderful presentation that will involve black lights, florescent paint and the body of Christ.  Immediately following, one of our alumni will talk briefly about their experience at ACS and how our school shaped their future.  The alumni will then introduce the speaker, Gabe Allen.

Following the speaker, the MC will mention that at each place setting there is an envelope for each guest/couple to prayerfully consider.  In the envelope will be a card with the following for them to fill out:

o       I would like to talk to someone about partnering with Applewood financially.  Please contact me. *

o       I would like to give a one time donation enclosed to ACS.

o       I would like to give a love offering to WallBuilders enclosed.

o       I would like more information about sending my child to ACS. *

Comments about this evening’s event.  __________________________

    ______________________________________________________________

    * Please fill out the contact information on the back.

There will be no pressure to give and there will be a chance for everyone to write something so no one should feel uncomfortable.  Do not worry about whether your guests will give or not.  If you have prayed about whom you should invite and you invited the people God laid on your heart, then let Him do the rest.  If He invited them, then He has a plan for them being at the event, and it may have nothing to do with money.

We will have a closing prayer and farewell.  We hope the entire event will not take any longer than 2 hours.  Once all the guests have departed, the host couple can scrape their dishes off and put them back into their cardboard boxes to go home and be cleaned.  We do not plan on washing them at school for fear that plates and silverware will get mixed up.  Then will all clean up the ROC and put everything back in order for Maplewood to have Sunday school the next day.  Once that is accomplished parents are free to go home.

The following are some of the questions I have been asked so far:

“Why aren’t children allowed?”  Our speaker will be talking for 30 min. on the importance of Christian education in America; we do not want people distracted by children who will not be able to sit through a speech of this kind.  The only students that will be attending will be grades 6 – 12 as they will be either performing or serving that evening.  Once they have completed their tasks, they will be sent to the AWANA room and pizza will be provided for them.

“Why don’t we use paper plates and utensils?”  This may seem to be the easiest option but I believe it sends the wrong message to our guests.  We are there to show off Applewood Christian School, we want the evening’s event to be a “nice” one.  Not fancy, but nice.  Some of the people who will be there that evening will be considering whether or not to partner with us financially, we want them to know that we are professional at what we do.

“Won’t the different plates at each table look odd?  What if my plates don’t match with the brown paper?”   I have been a quilter for 23 years and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that all of God’s colors blend marvelously with each other.  Just one look at nature or at one of your grandmother’s scrap quilts and you can see that is correct.  The tables will look just beautiful!

“Why are we doing this fund raiser anyway?  What is the money going to? ”  Let me clarify a few things about the ACS budget.  The sports program and all the social events of ACS are all self sustaining (they raise their own money).  Curriculum comes from book fees.  Approximately 90 percent of the incoming tuition goes towards paying teacher salaries.  Last year (2006-07) the school budget had a deficit of $4,000.00 for teacher salaries.  The Family Club made up for that difference by the card fund raiser we did last year.  This year (2007-08) the school budget began the year with a deficit of $10,000.00 for teacher salaries and we had decreased from three administrators to one.  This year the card fund raiser brought in $2,000.00.  Praise God, He already knew where the money would come from.  The Board found enough money in a non designated fund to cover the difference.  The point is, we can not count on the Family Club and surprise slush funds to finance our teacher salaries every year.  As it is our teachers are only making about $7.00/hr for the time that they are in the classroom.  If we want to keep quality teachers, if we want to have enough teachers to cover each class, and we don’t want to have to raise the tuition $400/family/year to cover the deficit (with no additional money for improvements), then we have to do a fund raiser of large proportion.  I, for one, do not want to have to sell stuff all year long to cover this cost.

The School Board is asking each family at ACS to do their very best for this one night to help them balance the budget for next year.  Applewood has been turning out Christian leaders for 20 yrs, don’t you want to help us make sure Applewood is still here so that your children and even your grandchildren can say they graduated from Applewood Christian School?

If you still have a question, do not hesitate to email me at yngheart@charter.net and ask away!

  • Week of Oct. 8 - 12

    Hi ACS Parents,

I know we have a lot going on these days and I pray that we hold strong as we try to juggle all that we do.  Parents are working the concession stand, attending soccer/volleyball games, inviting guests for the big fund raising dinner, helping students with their talent show performances, and now helping students selling greeting cards.  I know we are asking much of you right now and I promise that school life will slow by the holidays.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Galations 6: 9-10

Talent Show/Spaghetti Dinner Tickets – An order form for tickets was sent home.  Let us know how many you want and please send in a check by the end of this week.  Yes, students who are in the talent show still need to buy a ticket as this will pay for their meal.

Students in the Talent Show – Please be practicing your talents at home.  We will have a rehearsal next Thursday (Oct. 18) from 2 - 4 pm.  Please be sure to come with any props or costumes you need.

Family Club Fund Raiser – Your students brought home a catalog, letter, and order forms last Monday.  This was a huge success last year and we are excited to see what the kids will do this year!  Our goal is ten items per student with a maximum of 2 students per family.  All orders must be turned in by Oct. 15

College Night for Grades 9 - 12.  Thursday Oct 11 at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.  Jeff Backe will speak to students about applying to colleges and scholarships.

Teacher Meeting – Monday after school.

Mid Terms Reports -  Come out this Wednesday.

Well that’s all for now.  I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful fall weather.

    Yours In Christ,

    Pamela Young

  • Week of Oct 1 - 5

    Hi ACS Families,

Great News!  Mayor Bob Wasson, mayor of Sedalia is coming to our fundraising dinner on Nov. 17!

Plans have been going smoothly for our fund raising dinner.  Our speaker is secured, Debbie Marsh and her kitchen committee have been talking menus, and Maplewood church has partnered with us in bringing in the speaker.  We are so excited to see what God is going to do through this event.

I know I went through all of this at the Kick-Off but let me explain again the fundraising dinner and the part you play in it.

The school board has felt that in order to continue to keep costs down at ACS, we needed to put on a large scale fund raising event.  After careful consideration, it was decided that a dinner with a guest speaker who talked about the importance of Christian education would be just what we needed to attain our two goals:  (1) To raise yearly support for our school; and (2) To increase community awareness of Applewood Christian School and Christian education on a whole.  We chose Saturday, November 17 to host this event.

Our speaker for the evening is Gabe Allen, who comes from Wall Builders Inc.  Wall Builders is an organization dedicated to presenting America's forgotten history and heroes, with an emphasis on the moral, religious, and constitutional foundation on which America was built.  Wall Builders is a national pro-family organization which distributes historical, legal, and statistical information; and helps citizens become active in their local schools and communities. Their founder and president, David Barton is an author and historian.  His exhaustive research (from original writings) on the Founding Era has rendered him an expert in this field, and consequently he serves as consultant to state and federal legislators; has participated in several cases at the Supreme Court; was involved in the development of the History/Social Studies standards for both Texas and California students; and has contributed to projects and legislation set forth by countless other groups, individuals, and legislators across the country.

Our drama teacher, Mrs. Leon has been working on a drama presentation for that night as well.  We will have tables set up displaying the curriculum we use.  Art projects will line the walls.  One of ACS’s own alumni will introduce our guest speaker.

In your Kick Off packet, was a piece of yellow cardstock that is printed with 8 tickets.  (Please cut these tickets apart J)  Your part in this event is to invite 6 people to join you at our dinner.  You will be the host of your 8 person table and will be there early to greet your guests as they arrive for the evening.  The cost will be taken care of by ACS.

Who should you invite?  There are three groups of people that we feel would be interested in attending the dinner:

    1.    Those individuals that would be interested in partnering with us financially.

    2.    Those individuals that have children and are interested in what Christian education has to offer.

    3.    Members of our community that have heard about ACS but need to know more about what we are doing.  Like Mayor Wasson!

I encourage you not to wait to invite your guests.   Everyone is busy these days and schedules fill up fast.  Invite your guests now!  We will have place cards at the tables and will need to know your guests names.   Please email your list of guests to me at yngheart@charter.net so that we will know who you are bringing.  I would like your list of names sent to me no later than Oct. 15.

We are asking EVERY family to participate in this event.   I can not stress the importance that you play in making this event a success.  Without everyone’s involvement and those you invite, there will be no fund raising and no greater awareness of Christian education in our area.  We are counting on you!

Snack Attack Cards – Family Club is selling these cards for purchasing food at the concession stand during home games.  This allows parents to send a card with the child instead of money.  Snack Attack cards sell for $5.00 or $10.00.

Talent Show/Spaghetti Dinner Tickets – We will be sending home order forms for tickets on Monday.  Let us know how many you want and please send in a check.

Family Club Fund Raiser – Your students will be coming home with a packet of information about this on Monday.  This was a huge success last year and we are excited to see what the kids will do this year!

Student Council Meeting – Wednesday right after school!

Meet You At The Pole.  We met last Wednesday, students, teachers and parents for a wonderful time of prayer and worship.

Late Breaking News!  The Volleyball and Soccer teams participated in the Christian Fellowship Mid-Missouri tournament on Friday and Saturday and made ACS history.  For the first time participating in this tournament, the Lady Mustangs earned their place to compete in the tournament after winning 2 games and losing 1 game in pool play.  They lost their first game but it was extremely close.  The Mustang soccer team did a great job and took home the first place trophy!  Never before has the Mustang soccer team ever gotten so far in a tournament.  We are so proud of our Mustangs!

    Yours In Christ,

    Pamela Young

  • Week Of September 24 - 28

    Dear ACS Families,

Every year it takes all of us some time to get adjusted to the school year, whether it is a new teacher, a subject that is especially difficult, new friendships, or more homework than we are used to.  We all need to be patient with each other as we settle into the routine of a new school year.

If you are having problems with a teacher, a parent, or another student, we need to remember to follow Mathew 18:15 -17.

    1.     PRAY – everything turns out better when we get God involved.

    2.     Go to that person in love.

    3.     If you can not work things out, bring the problem to the principal.  I will act as your witness, to go with you to talk to that person again.

    4.     If you still feel that the problem has not been resolved you may contact Jennifer Boatright, School Board president, to get permission to address the board on the matter.

If you choose not to confront the person you are having the problem with, you have ONE other option; forgive and forget.  These are the things that are not an option:  holding a grudge, gossiping about the person, and turning others against that person.  Also, the Academic Committee is not in our chain of command, please do not bring problems with teachers to them.  What we all should be aiming for is restoring our relationship with our brother/sister in Christ.  Only then can our school be truly Christ-centered.

Concession stand work.  The office will be calling parents each week to remind them if they are scheduled to work in the concession stand.  If you are unable to make it please trade with another parent.  In an emergency call Pam Young 473-8145.

Volleyball and Soccer Tournament .  Our teams are off to Columbia for a tournament Friday and Saturday.  Classes for grades 8 – 12 will be cancelled on Friday.

    Monday home games:

Varsity Soccer              4:30  @ Paul Klover Field

    JH Volleyball                 5:00  @ ROC

    Varsity Volleyball          7:00  @ ROC

Meet You At The Pole.  Wednesday we will be going outside for Opening at 8:10 and the students will be leading us in prayer and worship.  Smithton has invited ACS for the second year to join them in their ceremony at 7:15.  We invite parents to come on out and join with us in these special events.

Lunch forms for October hot lunch will come out this Wednesday and will be due to the office by Monday morning.

The Talent Show is right around the corner!  Monday is the deadline for students and parents interested in displaying their gifts.  Contact Talent Show chairman Hannah Young (829-1599)!  Student council members will be expected to help with this Stucco fund raiser.  Be thinking about the department you would like to work in.  All members will help with clean up.  The following are areas of work and the student directors responsible for them:

    Department                            Director(s)

Talent                                      Becca Young & David DeMasters

Kitchen                                   Kasey Blake & Aston Allcorn

    Tickets                                    Jacob Wassam

Decoration/Set Up                 Melissa Backe & Rhiannon Crosier

Lights & Sound                      Micah Church & Aaron Meusborn

    Clean Up                                Drew Wedemeyer

Department directors, please gather for a meeting at 3:30 in room 200 Monday.

Mrs. Young’s office hours outside of school.  People have told me that I am hard to get a hold of. Actually, I am usually pretty easy to locate unless I don’t want to be found. J  When I am in school I am available all day except from 8:15 – 9:00 and 1:00 – 2:00, when I am teaching class.  Outside of school please do not call me after 9:00 pm as my brain is mush  by then.  Also, Thursday mornings I set aside time to recharge my battery by meeting with my friends to quilt, so I am unavailable from 9 – 12 am.  If it is an emergency, the before mentioned rules go out the window – I want to hear from you no matter what day or time.  The best way to catch me is on my cell phone (473-8145).  If I don’t answer my phone it may be because I forgot it at home.  I do not check email daily, nor am I very good at checking my answering machine messages, and I almost never check my cell phone messages.  I guess my point is, that if it is important for you to talk with me, keep trying to call.

    Yours In Christ,

    Pamela Young

  • Week of Sept. 10 - 14

    Dear ACS Families,

The 2007-08 school year has gotten off to a great start.  For the most part everyone is glad to be back to school.

We have also had our first volleyball and soccer games.  We hit the road to Independence Missouri and it was an incredible sight to see 50 students all wearing red uniforms with just as many accompanying parents and siblings walk into Pizza Street.  Though we did not do as well as we may have wanted in our games, the fellowship was well worth it.  Tomorrow, both of our teams will be playing.  Come on out and support your teams!
