Bulletin

  • Week of Oct. 27 - 31

    Hello ACS Parents,
Late Friday afternoon we discovered that one of our older students has head lice.  Please check your child’s hair, especially behind the ears and at the base of the hair in the back of the head.  The following web sites can help you understand this problem and what to look for:  www.ridlice.com or http//kidshealth.org.  We will check every child on Monday morning to be on the safe side.  Head lice are contagious.  Should you discover that your child has lice, let the office know.  RID, an over-the-counter medicated shampoo sold at WalMart has been recommended by Dr. Allcorn to treat students that have lice.  As with any other contagious sickness at our school we will handle the problem with care, caution, and prayer.

    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

  • Week of Oct. 20 - 24

    Hello ACS Parents,
As the days get colder and the autumn leaves are falling, I am reminded that November is around the corner and our Fund Raising dinner is merely 4 weeks away!  Mrs. Gear has been working diligently on arranging the guest speaker and the caterer.  I hope you all have been busy filling your table with 6 special guests that need to know more about Applewood Christian School.  Mrs. Gear will be calling each of you to see how you are doing and to answer any questions you may have about that night.  Childcare will only be available for the students who are coming to do the performance that night.  Please hire your own at home babysitter for your children that evening.   With everyone’s help, we are looking forward to a night that will promote Christian education and highlight ACS and our students.
Speaking of the accomplishments of our students, I hope you have all enjoyed receiving The Applewood Beacon.  The Beacon is put together by the ACS student council under the leadership of secretary & Beacon editor Melissa Backe.  Letters to the editor can be submitted to the office.  Great job Stucco!
Congratulations to the JV Volleyball Team for earning the Spirit Award at the varsity volleyball tournament we hosted this weekend.  When we had a team drop out last minute, our JV team agreed to fill in knowing they would be facing some very strong teams.  They did a tremendous job and kept a good attitude throughout!

    Happy Autumn!

  • Week of Oct. 13 - 17

    Hello ACS Families,
It is hard to believe that we are already making plans for Christmas, the prom, and graduation in the ACS office.  In some ways the school year passes by so quickly.  Students received their mid term grades last Monday.  Please show us that you have seen them by tearing off the bottom signature portion and sending it into the office.
Tickets for the fund raising dinner went out Wednesday.  If you did not get yours please contact the office right away.  It is very important that every ACS family do their best to make this event a success.
We also sent out copies of some of 4 of our most important policies that were recently reviewed by the school board this summer:  The Attendance Policy, Late or Tardy Policy, Late Homework Policy, and the Dress Code Policy.  Please review these policies as we have already had several students in danger of violating them.  Keep in mind, all of the ACS policies are available for download or merely to read on this web site in the download section.

    Enjoy the fall!
    Mrs. Young

  • Week of October 6 - 10

    Hello ACS Families,
Yesterday our Junior Varsity Volleyball team hosted a tournament.  We had 8 teams, all equally matched, competing.  It was an all day event.  By the last game our girls were getting pretty tired, but their hard work paid off because they emerged victorious, taking first place in the tournament!  It was also a great day for our concession stand, doing a constant business from 8:00am to 8:00pm.  Congratualations Lady Mustangs on a job well done!
Last week we sent home a homework timing sheet, to get an idea of how long homework was taking for your child.  If you did not get the sheet or forgot to time your child's work, please do that this week (additional forms are in the office).  Your input is invaluable in helping us ensure that classes are challenging but not overwhelming.  Mid terms come out Monday.  If your child is struggling in a class, please do not wait for the parent-teacher conferences day to contact your child's teacher and discuss the issue with them.  We want every child to succeed in learning.
    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

Mid Terms.  Teachers, the folders will be in the teacher’s lounge.  Please have your grades recorded by 1:00 so we can have time to copy them and get them to the students.  If you would like someone to take your class so that you have time to record your grades, please let me know.

Teacher Meeting – Monday Oct. 6 at 3:45.

The fund raising dinner has been set for Saturday, Nov. 15.  This project is essential for us as a school, we want ALL ACS parents participating in this event.  Tickets for the fund raising dinner will be going out either Monday or Wednesday.  If you do not get your set of tickets with instruction letter, please contact the office on Friday.

Concession Stand – If you can not work the shift you are scheduled for, please find someone to switch with.

An email will be going out listing all the parent volunteer jobs.  Please review this and make note of the jobs that you agreed to do.  If you have any questions about what the job entails, please contact the office.

Senior Recognition – We will be recognizing our senior soccer players on Oct. 23 and our senior volleyball player on Oct. 27.  Come on out and cheer on our seniors!

  • Week of September 29 - October 3

    Hello ACS Families,
Sorry I am getting this bulletin out so late, this weekend was a busy one, the varsity soccer and volleyball teams went to Columbia to participate in a tournament on Friday and Saturday.  Both teams did not do as well as they would have liked but that is the nature of sports.  We also learned that unexpected things can occur while playing sports.  Unfortunately during our last soccer game a very dramatic collision occurred between one of our players and one of the other team members.  Our player came away uninjured but the opposing player suffered a serious broken leg mere inches above his ankle.  It was a heart-wrenching moment as the opponent went down in agony and had to be carried off the field by his teammates.  One awe inspiring moment was as the players carried him off the field they were praying fervently out loud for him.  Our own Applewood warriors stopped all and gathered together to pray and look on as the tragedy unfolded.  Luckily Dr Allcorn was on hand to aid and comfort the team member until the ambulance arrived.  Though the boys played with all their might, they ended up losing the match.   The injured players name is Robert and he is a senior for those who would like to pray for him.  Also please keep our own players in constant prayer as they travel and participate during the sports season.

    Mrs. Young

    Announcements:

Thanks to Mr. Nichols for coming and demonstrating the art of blacksmithing to our students.  Mr. Nichols will be at Bothwell Lodge on Oct. 4th for those of you who would like to see him there.

Tomorrow (Monday) is the last day for ACS t-shirt orders.  Please turn in your order with payment to the office.

Christian College Fair for students grades 9 – 12.  A permission slip was emailed to each student’s home computer.  Please bring in the slip signed with $8.00 for gas and money for dinner.  We will be leaving directly after school.  We will stop to eat dinner before the fair.  We will be back to the ACS parking lot by 10:00 pm.

Mid term cut off is this Wednesday.  Teachers will have time on Monday morning to record their students’ grades.  Mid term reports will go home with students on Monday.

Next teacher meeting Monday Oct. 6.

Homework Survey.  Now that everyone has settled into a routine the academic committee would like to take a homework survey.  We will be sending home a sheet with each student tomorrow and would like parents to time how long it takes for each student to do each of their subjects both Tuesday and Thursday.  Be sure to include any work done during school (between classes or after school) or study hall.  This is to help teachers get an idea how long it is taking the students in their classes to do their homework.  Thank you for your assistance!

We are way overdue for a Spirit Day!  Let's show our spirit for our school and our sports teams by wearing red, white, and black this Friday!

The volleyball shirts will be ready just in time for spirit day!  Volleyball team players meet Becca Wednesday after school in the ROC to get your shirt.  If you haven't turned in your money by then please bring it with you.

Oct. 31 is still a NO SCHOOL day.  Since Oct. 29 is the last day of the quarter, we are making Oct. 31 a teacher work day so that teachers can work on their grades at home.  Students will have work on Thursday but not Friday.

Parent Teacher conferences have been moved to Nov. 10!

Collecting to raise funds.  At ACS we collect the following items to help bring money into the school:
                       Box Tops for Education
                       Tyson A+
                       Campbell’s Labels
                       Old cell phones
                       Aluminum cans

  • Week of September 22 - 26

    Hello Applewood families,
School is going along great!  The students and teachers are settling into a ruitine by now.  Our first tests are being given but it looks like some of our older students aren't back from summer vacation yet.  Parents, please keep track of when your students are having tests and encourage them to study.  They know about their tests at least a week in advance and should have them written on their planners.

Friday, September 26 our varsity soccer and volleyball teams will be attending a tournament in Columbia.  We will not be having school for grades 8 - 12, as there will only be a few students left in those grades.  Homework will be given for Thursday.  All other grades will have school as normal.  On the school calendar, it lists Oct 31 as a "no school" day due to a sports tournament (MAACS).  That tournament has been cancelled so we WILL have school on Oct. 31.

The school board will be meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 6:30pm in the Green room in the ROC.  An agenda for that meeting has been emailed to you.

We will be ending the family club fund raiser this Monday (Sept 22).  We will be collecting all the paperwork at this time.  If you are interested in a "buy out" option, please contact Gaye Hiller at 826-7580.  Thank you for all the hard work you have been doing in support of this fund raiser, we love having our afternoon secretary!

Concession stand schedule.  Students went home yesterday with a schedule for the concession stand workers.  If you are unable to make the date you are scheduled to work, please trade with someone else who is working on a date that is better for your schedule.  Then be sure to contact the office about the trade so our master list is correct.

Christian College Fair, Sept. 29 in Shawnee, KS.  I will be taking any high school students that are interested in visiting representatives from the 37 Christian colleges.  (A list of the attending colleges went home with the students.)  We will be leaving directly from school and will be stopping for dinner.  Students will need to bring $8.00 for gas and money for dinner.

ACT test.  Juniors and Seniors should be registering to take the ACT.  The deadline to take the test Oct. 25 is Monday, Sept. 22.

Just a quick note about the ACS directory.  Phone numbers, addresses, emails, and student's names are all priveleged information and should not be given out to anyone outside the ACS family but should be treated respectfully and carefully.

    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

  • Week of September 15 - 19

    Hello ACS Families!
Week 2 is behind us and though we had a bit of flooding in the CEL from the rain, it was a good week all in all.  The junior high volleyball team hosted a tournament on Saturday at the ROC.  The junior high team (7th & 8th) came away with second place, while the 5th & 6th grade team was awarded the Spirit Award for the Christlike behavior.  Great job girls!

There is only one more week of our fund raiser.  Our school organization number for on line sales is 877571.  It is our desire to keep our afternoon secretary, she has been a tremendous assett to the students, teachers, and administration.  Students do your best to help your school!

Parents, we all know how important a healthy diet is to learning.  The type of sugar we find in soda and candy does not have any nutritional value.  It is very good at giving us a quick burst of energy but just as quickly, leaves us tired and irritable.  Please do not send your students into school with soda or energy drinks.  Milk, juice, gatorade, or water is what we prefer.  If the student wants to bring in soda for after school that is fine, but not during or before school.  Also, Elementary students that have a morning recess are welcome to bring a healthy snack to eat during that time.  Older students that do not have a recess in the morning but need a snack to get through until lunch, are welcome to eat a quick healthy snack in the 5 minutes between classes.  They are not to eat during class.  Help us help your students to do their best.

A letter went home last week about an elementary field trip.  There was a question asking whether or not your student was going to attend the field trip.  ACS Rules on field trips is that all students in the assigned classes are required to attend scheduled field trips.  There are two reasons for this.  One is that ACS believes that there are other ways to learning and we hope that the field trip will be a fun way for the students to learn about something new in an environement outside of school.  Also, the homework is modified so that the student can take advantage of this special time of learning.  If your student is unable to attend the field trip for any reason, parents are asked to call the office as their student will be assigned additional homework.  Our field trip coordinators will be arranging 2 field trips (for each grade) during the school year.

There is still time to order Applewood t-shirts, etc (ACS Gear) in the new or classic design.  Additional order sheets are in the office.  Deadline for ordering is Friday, Sept. 26.  They make great Christmas gifts for grandparents!

Correction to the School Calendar - School Board meetings are the third Tuesday of each month. Everyone is welcome to attend.  The next meeting will be Sept. 23.  An agenda of the topics of the meeting will be emailed to every family prior to the meeting.

    Have a great week!
    Mrs. Young

  • Week of September 8 - 12

    Hello To All,
Our first week of school was full of the usual glitches that comes with the beginning of a school year.   As Lorna Sparks, our new afternoon secretary put it, "It's crazy around here!"  Yes it was.  I look forward to this week when everyone will begin to settle into a nice comfortable rythmn.

We have been blessed by our ACS family members that have come forward to fill some of the empty teacher slots that we had.  Mrs. Reickhoff is already comfortable in her position as our new art teacher.  Mrs. Kjar will be teaching 4th grade Bible and two study halls.  Mrs. Price will be taking one of our study halls.  Mrs. Wedemeyer will be helping during lunch time on Wednesdays.  Mrs. Hopkins (Jacinda Wassam's mom) will be teaching the 9th & 10th grade girls Bible class.  And Mr. Marsh is taking on the 11th & 12th Bible class.  Thanks to these willing moms, dads, and grandparents!  We are still praying for 2 men to take the two boys Bible classes.

    Announcements:

Teacher meeting Monday at 3:45.  Students waiting for their parents during the teachers meeting are required to go to the ROC and do  their homework on the stage.  Students are not allowed to be outside the school building without adult supervision.

The Family Club Fund Raiser begins this Monday and runs for 2 weeks.  Check your child's backpack for more information.

Another great year has come to a close.  Thank you for the support and the committment that you have given to Applewood, the teachers, the school board, and to me.  We could not make it through the school year without our dedicated parents!  The following is a list of reminders to close out this year and bring in the next:

Book Turn In Day - Wednesday, May 28 from 1 - 4 in the ROC.  All nonconsumable books are returned at this time (parents do not forget your solutions manuals).  Also any outstanding fees and book fees ($155.00 per child) for next year are due at this time.  Report cards and any last papers/assignments will be given to the student when all books and fees are turned in.

Clean Up Day - Saturday, May 31 from 8:00am to 12:00.  Parents and students please join us in cleaning the buildings and grounds we are priveleged to use.  Maplewood families will work side by side with Applewood to clean up from the school year.

September tuition due in June.  In helping us to set the budget and teacher schedules for the coming year we are requesting a committment of September's tuition to be paid in June.  Tuition for one month is $145 per student with a family surcharge of $35.

Teachers!  Teacher meeting on Wednesday, May 28 from 8 - 12 in the ROC.  We will be discussing what areas we have felt where our successes and what areas we feel we are weak in from this last school year.  Teacher books are due at this time for teachers who are not returning and those that will be changing classes, as well as all teacher grade books.  Teacher contracts for the following year will be presented at this time.

Don't forget to rest up and have fun this summer!  A letter will be sent out to students of the Applewood events for the summer.  See you on Wednesday!

    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

  • Week of May 12 - 16

Happy Mother's Day to our ACS Moms!
It's hard to believe that this is our last week of school.  Senior graduation went perfectly on Saturday!  Thanks to all the ACS families that took time out of their day to help make the day special for our seniors.  Our Kindergarten class graduates this Tuesday evening at 6:30pm.  Along with the graduates and special guest speaker Logan Austin, the elementary is putting on a special performance for us, as well as some MAACS performances, teacher farewells, and Book-It certificates.  Everyone is encouraged to attend!

Wednesday is our last day in the school buildings so we will be doing our normal Friday clean up then.  Parents please plan on picking up students at 4:00.  Most of the 8th  & 9th  grade will be leaving for their history field trip to Boston on Wednesday.  I know they will have a great time but let's keep them in our prayers.  Then Friday, grades K - 7 will be off to the Warrensburg Community Center for a fun day in the pool followed by a picnic lunch afterwards.  (See directions and details below).  As for the rest of grades 8 - 11, they will helping with a special fund raiser I am calling "Chuck the Duck" (see details below).  That will conclude another great school year.  Books will be turned in on May 28 from 1 - 4pm.  Grade cards will be given at the time books are turned in and all accounts are closed out.

Swimming at the Warrensburg Community Center - Swimming begins at 11:00 to 1:00pm.  Please wear a modest swim suit (one piece for girls) and bring your towel.  Cost to get in is $2.50.  Bring a sack lunch and plan on staying afterward to eat and play in the park directly behind the Center.  Coolers will be available.  Directions:  Take hwy 50 to hwy 13 exit in Warrensburg.  Go left onto Maguire St.  Take a left on Gay St.  The Community Center is on the corner of Maguire and North streets.  Additional questions call Debbie Cormican.

Chuck-A-Duck Fund Raiser - I got a phone call about a month back from Mr. Dave Wolf, he runs a training camp for hunting dogs, out on E Hwy.  He was looking for individuals to help by throwing dead ducks for the dogs to retrieve.  I passed this on to the athletic department knowing how costly it is to run our sports program.  Mr. Wolf will pay our school $800 to work for 2 days.  This amount will pay for the cost of renting our gym for the year!  What a great opportunity to raise much needed funds for our sports program, as well as increase awareness of our school.  I apologize that the word did not get out to everyone sooner.  I have been busy and dropped the ball on this.  We are needing students and parents who would be willing to work either Friday or Saturday from 7:30am to 4:00pm.   There will be a training session Wednesday at 2:45 at school.  Workers need to bring gloves and wear a white t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers and to bring a black, brown, or green t-shirt as well.  Lunch and drinks will be provided.  Check Mr. Lansing's blog for further info.  Students unable to go on the Friday field trip because they are participating in Chuck-A-Duck will be invited to a fun day event next week (details to follow).

Elementary rehearsal - Tomorrow grades K - 5 will have a rehearsal for their kindergarten graduation performance immediately following school.  Students will be practicing in the sanctuary.  Parents please pick up students at 5:00pm from the sanctuary.  Don't forget to bring your flashlights!

Parent Volunteer Jobs - Monica Triplett has sent out a letter to all parents asking for parents to write up a description of the jobs they held this year for the parents next year and in the future.  Also, there is a place on the letter to indicate which job you are interested in doing during the 2008-09 school year.  Please get those letters in by Wednesday.

Boys Soccer Coach - Parents we are in need of a soccer coach for the fall.  If you are interested call Bill Lansing.

4th Quarter ends on Wednesday.  All school work must be to your teachers by that time!

Don't forget to turn in all Book Mobile books this week!

  • Week of May 5 - 9

    Hi Parents,
Only 2 more weeks of school!  Where did the time go?  We will be having a book turn in day May 28 from noon to 4:00.  Students can help out the school by erasing all marks on their books.  Books that have the student's name written in marker on the cover are consumable books and can be kept.  All books must be turnd in and any delinquent accounts must be brought up to date before students will receive their final report card for the year.

We had a great time Saturday night as ACS went back to the 1950's in Uncle Phil's Diner.  Young and old had a great time laughing and rocking to songs like "Rock Around The Clock" and "Johnny Be Good".  Thanks to the creative talents of Mrs. Blake for turning the ROC into a diner.  Thanks to Mrs. Leon for her endless committment of time in working with the students and all the details that came with the performance.  Students in grades 6-8 did a good job serving & dancing.  Students in grades 9 & 10, did a fabulous job dancing, singing, and getting into their characters.  I can't wait to see what Mrs. Leon comes up with next year!

Prom Pictures - last call to order Prom 2008 pictures.  Email Scott Young.

Teacher Meeting - Monday after school.

No May Tuition - ACS does not charge for May, instead book fees ($155/student) are due for the next school year by May 15.

Kindergarten Graduation - Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary.  This is a school wide event, look for a copy of the program next week.

ACS Clean Up Day - Saturday, May 31.  Students and parents please help us clean the school!

Last Day of School! - We are heading to the Warrensburg Community Center for swimming, basketball, tennis, baseball, and FUN!  School will begin at 11:00 when we meet at the Center.  Swimming is from 11:00 - 1:00, the cost is $2.50.  Students that don't want to swim, there is a park directly behind the Center, where we will have games.  Bring your baseball glove!  Students are asked to bring a sack lunch and a drink, we will have lunch in the park after swimming at 1:15.  (Be sure to have a snack before you come).  Let's end this year with a fun day at the park!

Applewood families are invited to attend the Commencement Ceremony of the Class of 2008 on Saturday afternoon, the Tenth of May, 2008 at One pm in the sanctuary.   Look for your invitation going home with students Monday!

  • Week of April 28 - May 2

    Dear ACS Families,
The deacons of Maplewood Church have given approval for the Applewood Student Council to have a sign made and put up at the entrance to the second parking lot.  What an awesome thing for our youth to do!  Not only will sports teams and prospective new students be able to find us, but it is a great boost to our school spirit to finally have a sign that announces who we are.

This gave me an idea.  Each year ACS tries to give back to Maplewood in a small way by hosting a clean up day where the older students paint walls, pull weeds, and wash desks and chairs.  This year Maplewood is scheduling a Clean Up Day on Saturday, May 31 for the members of their church.  Instead of having our own seperate clean up day, I thought it would be great to join theirs!  This way Maplewood families can meet ACS families and see the students they are supporting every day by allowing ACS to rent their facilities.  When we installed the new playset a couple years ago, Maplewood and Applewood families worked together to get the task accomplished.  That was a great day!  Maplewood and Applewood people each said how much they enjoyed getting to know the other group.

So students and parents, set aside May 31 on your calendars.  Show your appreciation to Maplewood by coming out to help.  (Students younger than grade 6 need to have a parent present).  Let us use this opportunity to strengthen our relationship with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young
