  • Week of February 16 - 20

    Hello Parents,
What a great time we had at the Valentine’s Party at Jester’s Bowling Alley!  Students from K to 12th bowled, snacked, played games, and just had fun visiting with their fellow students and home school friends.  I even saw Mr. Bergman, Mr. Marsh, and Mrs. Carter bowling with groups of students.  Thanks to all the parents who helped clean up after it was all over and to Mrs. Norman for organizing the event.

    Mrs. Young

School Board Meeting – Monday, Feb. 16 at 6:30pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Agenda has been sent to your email addresses.

Yearbook working meeting – Monday, Feb. 16 right after school.  Since the two ladies who do the yearbook every year have gotten only one volunteer to help and the yearbook is due to the printers at the end of February, this will be the last year for the yearbook.

Local Mission Team meeting – Students in grades 9 – 12 that are not attending the Honduras mission trip, please meet with Mrs. Young this Wednesday, Feb. 18 immediately following school to discuss mission opportunities.  Parents are welcome.

Prom Committee Meeting – Thursday, Feb. 19 at 6:00.  This is for all juniors and at least one of their parents to attend.

A Note from the Honduras Mission team:
I'm sure by now everyone knows about the mission trip to Honduras. You may not know about some of the things we will be doing there though. One thing we are going to do is hand out hygiene kits. These kits will include things such as: shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, wash cloth, comb, etc. If you would like to contribute to this, we need more toothbrushes and washcloths. There will be a box in the office where you can drop off these items. Thank you once again for your support and continue to keep us in your prayers.

BMX Show – Monday, March 2 from 1:00 – 1:15.  The date is finally here!  Those students who sold 10 items at the fund raiser this past fall earned the chance to watch the BMX show.

    Upcoming Events:
    • Feb. 26 – 28 - Girls Basketball team goes to Tournament in OK
    • March 4 – end of 4rd quarter.
    • March 6 – Spring sports awards

  • Week of Feb. 2 - 6

    Dear ACS Families,
What a great time we had at the Carnival!  I think this was the biggest turnout we have had in the 6 years we have had the carnival.  I was reviewing pictures from the past carnivals going back to the first one held on Jan. 31, 2004 at the Lutheran Church.   How far it has come!  This year we were able to raise $1,871.16!  Part of that amount will go for putting safety pads on the walls of the ROC and part will go for the mission team to go to Honduras. Congratulations to Brent & Lisa Cloud and all the Student Council members for a job well done!  I also want to thank those students who ended up getting pies in their faces; Kirstin Bergman, Jacob Bergman, Cody Capps, Meredith Crosier, and Jake Wassam for being such good sports.  If you want to see the pictures from this year’s carnival, the ACS pictures are stored at the following web site:   http://public.fotki.com/spbrh1983  The password is “ACS”.  Be sure to leave comments under each picture, my husband loves to read them.

    Have a Blessed Week,
    Mrs. Young

  • Week of January 26 - 30

    Hello Parents,
It is that time of the year where we evaluate how we have been doing this year while getting ready for the next school year.  We will be sending home teacher surveys soon.  This is not an opportunity to complain about issues that you have not talked to your teachers about.  This is an opportunity to evaluate the teaching, the curriculum, and the environment of your students.
The office sent home “Consideration for Reapplication” forms on Friday. This is for you to indicate whether or not you are interested in having your student return to ACS for the coming school year.  Please return the form as soon as possible.  We are beginning to accept applications for students and teachers for the next school year as well.  If you know someone who is interested in ACS, please have them contact the office to set up a visit or better yet, invite them to come with you to the Carnival coming up.

    Yours in Christ,
    Pamela Young

Hot lunch forms for February due in by Monday, Jan 26.  Parents, please be sure that your kids will eat the meal they are signed up for.  We had Oriental Chicken Salad last week and I counted 23 students that either did not eat or ate very little of their lunch.  What a tremendous waste of food and discouragement for the seniors making the meal.  Also, I had a lot of hungry students in the afternoon.

Reminder for parents working the concession stand.  Students younger than 9th grade are not allowed to be in the kitchen with you.

Mustang Basketball – ACS basketball teams are doing great this year! Be sure not to miss seeing our Mustangs.  Varsity home games this Friday starting at 6pm.

Carnival Time!  Saturday evening at 6:00pm.  This is a night put on by the Student Council for ACS students and their families.  Come for dinner and to play.  There are games like the cake walk, football toss, not to mention that the Big Boy Bash is back!  There are special activities like face painting, the Moon bounce, and the pie-in -the-face competition.  We will have great food like homemade desserts and chili.  The special event of the evening is ACS seniors’ version of Fear Factor!  Invite friends and neighbors, everyone is welcome!  The majority of the proceeds will be going to the Honduras mission trip.  Help bring the message of the gospel to another country by having a night of fun for the whole family.

Pie-in-the-face Competition – Money is being collected for students and teachers to get a pie in the face during the Carnival.  Parents, please monitor the money your child brings in.  We don’t want anyone emptying their bank without mom & dad knowing.  It is a fun event, even for those who get the pie, I should know!

It is time to order the 2008-09 yearbook.  Order forms will come out this week.

Working Days for yearbook.  In order to get the yearbook ready for printing we need parents & students to help put it together.  Our first work day is scheduled for this Wednesday at 3:30 in the ROC.  If you like to scrapbook, this is a job for you!

Next prom committee meeting – Feb.19 at 6:00pm.  For all juniors and their parents.

    Upcoming Events:

School wide Valentine’s Day party at Jesters on February 12th from 1:00 – 3:00.  Cost is $2.50/student.  Homework will be modified that day so students can attend the party.

Honduras Mission Trip – Students from grades 9 – 12 will be going to Honduras from March 14 – 21.  They will be doing a vacation bible school program for the students and working on a construction project as well. • Week of January 5 - 9

    Hello ACS Families,
I hope your Christmas break was restful and full of the joy of sharing time with family and friends.  It is hard to believe that this week marks the start of the second semester.  We are half way through the school year already!  Second semester tends to zoom right by and before we know it, it is summer break again.  Be sure to help your students keep on track for tests, normal homework, and special projects that they are assigned.  Let’s make a New Years resolution of being sure to read the bulletin and check the school calendar weekly so that we aren’t caught unaware of the goings on at school.
    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

Teacher meeting tomorrow Jan. 5 at 3:45pm in the Green room.

Students be sure to get all outstanding work into your teachers by Wednesday.  If you think you may be behind on a subject be sure to talk with your teacher.  Do not wait for them to tell you what you are missing.  Grades for 2nd quarter end Wednesday!

Thanks to the Stuco students who delivered Meals on Wheels Wednesday, Dec. 31st.   What a blessing you were to those individuals!

Thanks to those who donated money to the Forest Ave Homeless Shelter in Kansas City on behalf of the teachers.  The money was used to do some renovations that allowed them to take in more people.

  • Week of December 15 - 19

    Hello Parents,
Last week was a busy one.  Wednesday in chapel we had a special guest.  Hannah Yonce, a 7th grade student Sacred Heart, came to tell about her involvement with the Forest Avenue Homeless Shelter and Church in Kansas City.  She has been going to Forest Ave. every Christmas for the last few years bringing presents and food for the people there.  Our students listened intently as Hannah described the people in need and how each had touched her life as well.  To show our support of Hannah and the work she is doing at the shelter, we are asking that families who would like to show their appreciation for your child’s teacher to give a monetary donation instead of a teacher gift.  These donations will be collected in the office and then sent to Forest Ave.

Friday, the new discipline procedure that the board approved Monday was discussed with the junior and senior high.  The students asked many good questions that challenged their fellow Christian students. The administration hopes that this new procedure will not only bring more consistency to discipline but will give students more thorough guidelines on what type of behavior is expected of them.  Parents need to review this new procedure.  It can be read on the web site in the Downloads section.

Your ACS staff hope that the students and their families will have a blessed and relaxing Christmas break.  Don’t forget to spend time each day in worship and prayer for the greatest of all gifts – Jesus.

    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

Two more weeks and Christmas break will be upon us!  Our Christmas program featuring the elementary students singing Christmas songs and performing their rendition of The Prince and the Pauper and the junior high’s production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer were wonderful!  Thanks to Mrs. Leon for all her hard work with the students.

With Christmas close by everyone is beginning to think of those people they want to be sure to remember.  Parents ask me every year what they can do to say “thanks” to the teachers.  Each year our teachers have asked parents to donate to a cause of their choice.  We will be doing that again this year, in lieu of teacher gifts.  I will have a couple teachers decide on the organization or the item that the donation will go to.

    Announcements:

Mid term reports went out for student in grades 3 - 12.  Parents, please return the signed section to the office.

Please be sure to put in your students’ name in all of their outer clothing.  Jaden Harshner has been wearing a camouflage coat that is 2 sizes too big for him because someone took his coat and left theirs.  Please look your child’s outer clothing over, make sure it is theirs, and write their name inside.

We will have all the lost and found items over at the AWANA room.  Parents please look through these items as we are planning on taking them to Open door this week.  We had a woman’s long leather jacket size 14 left after the Feast.  We are also acquiring lots of holiday plates.

Props for Tom Sawyer.  Thanks to all those individuals that provided the props for our play.  Please pick them up Monday after school as we need to get the ROC ready for a wedding.

Meals on Wheels.  Our friends at Meals On Wheels have asked if ACS could help them out by delivering meals on Dec. 31st.  We will need 6 teams of a driver and helper (more are welcome) to be at the Meals office (2311 W. Main St.) at 10:15 am.  Contact the ACS office if you can help.

School Board Meeting changed to Monday, Dec. 6 at 6:30pm.  The agenda has been emailed to you.  Everyone is welcome!

Dec. 19 is Christmas party day at school.  School starts on time at 8:00am and ends at noon.  Students do not need to bring a lunch but we are asking each family to bring in a snack to share.  If your last name begins with A – M please bring in a sweat treat.  If your last name begins with N – Z please bring in a healthy snack (crackers & cheese, fruit, chex mix, etc.)  Homeroom moms need to prepare a craft or game for that day and need to be at school by 8:00.  Exchange gifts need to be brought to school Wednesday, Dec. 17.  Please put the name of the child the gift is intended for on the outside of the wrapping.

One Call.  We have initiated the One Call program for our school.  One Call will make it easier for us to get last minute messages out to our families.  Our One Call message begins “This is a message from Applewood Christian School.” Then there is a short pause and the recorded message begins.  Coaches and committee chairman have the ability to record their own messages.  Any other messages that need to be sent to a group of students, please contact the school office, they will take down the message and send it out.

    Upcoming Dates:
Christmas Break - Dec. 20 - Jan. 4, back to School Jan. 5.
End of 2nd Quarter - Jan 7, report cards out Jan. 14
             Stuco Carnival - Jan 31

  • Week of Dec. 1 - 5

    Hello ACS Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  The Feast went very well this year with the help of many dedicated servants.

In early November the student leaders in our school attended a conference on Biblical leadership.  They learned that being a leader means being willing to be a servant.  “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”  Mark 9:35   At ACS servanthood is modeled for the students every day because it is an important character trait that we hope that they develop.  We expect them to chip in when there is work to do without being asked.  If everyone took the attitude of servanthood to heart, the work would be quickly accomplished and the burden lighter for everyone.  Help us to train your child to be more like Christ, be a model of servanthood.

Below, please see the list of parent jobs.  Be sure you are doing what you have signed up for.  Also remember that your family jobs must total 3 points for the year. If you have questions about what your job entails, contact the office.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”  Romans 12:1

    Yours In Christ,

    Mrs. Young

    School Board:

Below is the agenda for the upcoming school board meeting this Tuesday evening in the ROC.  One item of interest is that the school board is revisiting their vote on not allowing student dances to be hosted by ACS (like the homecoming dance).  At this point the only dance the school board allows is the junior senior prom.  If you have any opinions either way you may want to attend the meeting or call your representative school board member.

  • Week of Nov. 10 - 14

    Hello ACS Parents,
The fund raising dinner is this Saturday!  I want to thank all those who have been diligently doing their best to invite 6 guests.  Monday morning we will make our last count of people for food.  Please send in any new names you have for your table today to Mrs. Gear (jameslgeariii@sbcglobal.net) or to the office (acsmustangs@charter.net).  Mrs. Gear and I will be moving around ACS families and teachers to fill in  tables that did not have 8 on them.  A list of who is on your table and detailed instructions of your responsibilities for that night will be given to you at the Parent – Teacher conference.
Families that are unable to attend the fund raising dinner will be given a couple other options for supporting the school.
High school students, please let me know by tomorrow whether or not you will be able to help serve at the dinner.  You will need to dress in black or blue slacks (Dockers) and a white polo or button down shirt.  Please make sure you are at the school by 5:00 for set up.
There has been some question about child care.  We do not have any space or people to run a child care.  Students grades 6-8 will be in the program that evening and once their performance is done, they will go to the AWANA room to watch a movie and eat pizza.  Our high school students will be busy serving and parents are busy hosting tables.  Please be sure your guests have set up their own child care or have everyone on your table bring their children to your house to share a babysitter.
Please be in prayer that this event will be successful in supporting our school for its future.  As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call the office.

    In Prayer for Our School,
    Mrs. Young

    Hello ACS Families,
The fund raising dinner is just around the corner!  I hope everyone has been doing their best to invite 6 guests to come and see what Applewood is all about, to hear about the importance of Christian Education from our guest speaker Damian Ahrens, principal of Tri City Christian School in Independence Missouri, and to find out how they can partner with us financially.  Families that are interested in Christian Education for their children; individuals who are looking to partner financially with us in doing God’s work; and leaders in the community who need to know more about what our school is all about are the type of guests that you should be inviting.  We would like each family’s guests list to be turned in tomorrow (Wednesday at the latest), so that we know where we stand with decorating and catering.  Also, please be praying for this event and its success.

Parent – Teacher conferences will be held next Monday evening at 6:00pm in the ROC.  We hope that all parents plan to attend.  Upon entering the ROC, parents will be given their student’s report card and a list of their teachers and classes.  All the teachers will be set up at tables around the gym floor.  Across from each teacher, will be 2 parent chairs set up, as you see these chairs become available, have a seat and visit with that teacher.  The teachers will be prepared to tell you how your student is doing in class academically and behaviorally.  When you have visited with each of your child’s teachers, you are done!  We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to get to know your child’s teachers a little better.
