Bulletin

  • Week of September 21 - 25

    Hello Applewood Family,
We had a great week at school, filled with the Show-N-Tell of some of God’s amazing creatures.  Sean Carter brought in two large hermit crabs.  Isaac and Jon Kjar brought in a couple snakes that they had found. There was much screaming when Mr. Christopherson brought in an Eastern Hog-nosed Snake.  This nonvenomous snake hisses loudly when it feels threatened.  If this defense fails to scare off an enemy, the snake thrashes around, open its mouth, rolls over and plays dead.  Despite the screams, the students really enjoyed watching and learning about this fascinating reptile (I know I did ).

We had hot lunch for the first time.  The grilled cheese sandwiches were browned to perfection!  Great job seniors!  There were a few younger children who were confused about whether they were signed up for hot lunch or milk or not.  Please talk with your students about what they are getting.  We do have lists of “who gets what” but it makes the process run more smoothly if the student already knows that they are to get white or chocolate milk and that they are supposed to get hot lunch.  Also, we had a few students who were signed up for hot lunch but didn’t like grilled cheese.  This makes for one hungry student all afternoon.  Please review the menu with your students before you order their lunch.

The Book Mobile came yesterday.  Younger students (K – gr.4) are allowed to get two books and are required to keep them at school.  Older students are allowed to take their books home but must return them by the time the Book Mobile returns the next month.  Mrs. Rehmer (our book mobile mom) logs the books that each student checks out.  If a student looses a book, they will be required to pay for it.

Just a reminder about younger siblings and sports practices.  If parents do not plan on picking up their children until after volleyball or soccer practice – the following must occur:  older siblings are required to pick up their younger siblings from their elementary teacher over in the CEL (elementary students are only released to designated individauls and are not allowed to walk off);  there must be someone designated to watch that younger student while their sibling is in practice (coaches & athletes are too busy to watch other students).  This means parents asking another mom that stays for the practice to watch their child.  Also, no one is allowed to play outside unless accompanied by someone 18 yrs or older.  These rules are set up for our students’ safety and in accordance with our insurance company.

    Gratefully Yours,
    Mrs. Young

“Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.  And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” Col 3:16-17

    Announcements

Varsity Volleyball & Soccer Tournament in Columbia Sept 25 & 26.
High school classes for grades 11 & 12 will not be held on Friday (25th).  All other grades;  classes will go on as normal.  Athletes missing class on that day will be required to make up all missed work (including gr. 11 & 12).  Please refer to the coaches blogs for further information.

Family Club Meeting – Monday, Sept. 21 at 3:30 in the Green Room

Teacher Meeting – Monday, Sept. 21 at 3:40 in the Cafeteria in the CEL

End of the day pick up for elementary students.  Parents, unless you have a student in both buildings, please park in the parking lot to the right of the CEL building.  This reduces the amount of students and cars in the one parking lot and makes it a lot safer for the little guys.  Parents must come get their students from their teacher.  Please be timely as teachers may need to leave directly after school.  The students have been getting their chores done quickly so please pick them up at 3:45 on Friday (3:30 on MW).

    Needs

Substitute teachers – I want to encourage parents that this is not hard.  Each teacher writes out a lesson plan to be accomplished and makes it as easy as possible for the sub. Subs are paid minimum wage.

    Gratitude
Thanks to Jethro for bringing in a very cool snake.

Thanks to Mrs. Rehmer & MAMa (Mother’s Against Methamphetamine) for coming to our rescue and letting us borrow their projector until our new one arrives.

  • Week of September 14 - 18

    Hello ACS Families!
Our first week of school was a mixture of several feelings.  We were concerned and disappointed over the theft of our 3 laptop computers and our projector, as well as the theft of the church’s projector, speakers, and $35 in cash.  The sheriff’s department continues in their investigation of the theft for us.  Please continue to pray that this issue would be resolved quickly and that our property would be returned to us.
There were also feelings of excitement over the beginning of school and even a bit of confusion now and then.  “Where am I supposed to go next?”  With two days under our belts, we have already ironed out many of the bugs.  We hope that the enthusiasm that permeated the school this last week, continues as homework gets heavier and the reality that we are back in school begins to set in.
    Yours in Christ,
    Mrs. Young

“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” Col 3: 14-15

  • Week of September 9, 2009

    Hello Applewood Families,
Welcome to a new school year!  I know that the 2009-2010 school year is going to be an exciting one.

We have many forms of communication at ACS.  This bulletin is our #1 source of information.  Please be sure to check it each weekend for any information pertinent to you or your student. One-Call is used for anything that is time sensitive.  Email is useful if the information is lengthy or an attachment is needed.  Sometimes, we will send papers home with the students, especially if a signature is needed.  Our student newspaper, the Beacon, will give you a more personal look at ACS events either upcoming or past.  And lastly, we will use the good ‘ole telephone to contact specific individuals.

I will be changing the format of the bulletin somewhat.  Each week along with a chatty note from me and a list of announcements you will also see the following components:

Mark Your Calendar – This section will announce upcoming events without detailed information, so that you can mark your calendar and save the date.
Needs – Specific needs the school has.
Prayer Requests – Things you can be praying about for the school or its families.
Gratitude – This section will be an ongoing thank you note for people and things that we are grateful for.

ACS is putting on an attitude of gratitude!  This year the teachers and students are making a commitment to learn to be “content in any and every situation” (Phil 4:12) and to focus on what they are thankful for.  Each month we will have a theme to focus our gratitude on, and we will have activities throughout the year that help us remember to be thankful.

As we begin this new school year, let’s remember to be patient with each other as we work out the bugs that come with every new year.

    Yours in Christ,
    Mrs. Young

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philip 4:4-7

  • Week of May 11 - 15

    ACS Families,
It is hard to believe that the school year is almost at an end.  This week we will be celebrating with two Applewood groups, the beginning of their new journeys.  The kindergarten class is graduating on Tuesday.  We will also take time to recognize MAACS accomplishments, Book-It, and departing teachers.  It is an evening for all of Applewood not just the 5 kindergarten families.  On Saturday, we will commission the ACS Class of 2009 to go out into the world and do great things for Christ.  Don’t miss out on the cake and the festivities!
As the summer progresses, I will communicate with ACS families via the web site (bulletin & calendar), One-Call, and email.  If you did not receive an email today about the spirit day, please check with the office to make sure we have your correct email address.  Please pay close attention to the information below on the end of the school year requirements.
    Yours in Christ,
    Mrs. Young

Spirit Day Monday – Wacky Hair or Hide in your Hat Day!  Students are allowed to color, cut, or shape their hair any way they want to as long as their hair returns to school standards by Wednesday.  If they just want to slap a hat on their head instead that is fine too.

Clean Up Day Thursday, May 14 beginning at 8:00am and ending at noon. If you were not able to make the last clean up day, please be sure to attend this one.  Just a reminder, students in grades 6 – 12 are expected to help with clean up.  Students in grades K – 5 are welcome to work alongside their parent. Parents who are available are encouraged to join us.

Summer Reading Program – The Academic Committee has created a new summer reading program for ACS students to help improve their reading skills.  The reading program for high school students was introduced last week.  This week we will be releasing the details for the junior high and elementary levels.  Please look for this information to come home with your student.

May Tuition – We do not collect tuition in May, instead we collect book fees ($155 per student) for the next school year.  Also, September’s tuition is due in June to reserve your student’s spot for the 2009-2010 school year.

Kindergarten Graduation – Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary.  We will be recognizing the Class of 2021, as well as Book-It and MAACS awards, and will be followed by a reception for the graduates in the AWANA room.  We encourage the whole ACS family to attend.

Last Day of School – We are having a special finale to the 2008-09 school year, a Mark Twain literary festival put on by the junior and senior high students!  School will start for elementary students at 12:00pm. Junior and Senior high will meet in the morning for set up (your lit teacher will give you the details).  The school day will end at 4:00pm.

Book Turn In, Friday, May 15 - Mrs. Bergman will be located in the ROC to collect books.  Soft cover books with the student’s name written on the front are consumables and do not need to be turned in.  All other books will need to be turned in at that time.  Book mobile books need to be turned in.  Solution manuals rented to parents also need to be turned in.  Please be sure to erase all writing inside the books before you turn them in.

Final Report Cards and Iowa Basics Results – Students will receive their final report cards and their results of their achievement testing in the mail in two weeks when the following items are met:  All books turned in and all outstanding debts to the school paid up.

The Class of 2009 would like to formally invite our entire Applewood family to attend their graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 16 at 3:00pm in the ROC.  Reception to follow.

  • Week of May 4 - 8

    Parents,
The combined clean up day went very well, thanks to those students and parents who turned out for the event.  Since the Maplewood deacons gave us such a short notice, I knew there would be many students who would not be able to make it on Saturday.  That’s OK because there is a lot of things that still need to be done to close down the school for the summer.  For those students and parents that were not able to attend the clean up day on May 2, we will be having another day to clean up on Thursday, May 14 beginning at 8:00am and ending at noon. Just a reminder, students in grades 6 – 12 are expected to help with clean up.  Students in grades K – 5 are welcome to work alongside their parent. Parents who are available are encouraged to join us.   Let’s close down one school year and prepare for the next.
    Yours in Christ,
    Mrs. Young

Quick teacher meeting – Monday either during lunch (11:15) or right after school (you pick a time that works for you).  Debbie Marsh will tell us what will be happening on the last day of school.

Academic Meeting for Grades 8 – 11 – May 4 at 6:30pm in the ROC.  This is a mandatory event for parents and their students in grades 8 -11.  We will be reviewing each students’ course choices and their graduation eligibility.  This is an extremely important meeting for those students that plan on attending ACS next year, please plan on attending the meeting.

Hannibal Field Trip cancelled – We needed at least 20 students to go on the field trip to Hannibal and we did not get enough so it is cancelled.

Student Council Elections were held last Wednesday.  The following officers were elected for the 2009-2010 school year:

  • Week of April 27 - May 1

    Dear Parents,
Our production of Sense & Sensibility was a huge hit!  One of the guests made a point of coming to me and telling me that our play was better than many she had seen at Smith-Cotton.  That was an encouragement to me as I often wonder how we compare to other schools.  Many of the guests who attended were amazed at how accurate the costumes and set were to the period of the play.  They were also surprised that our students could memorize so many lines!  All in all Mrs. Leon, her cast and crew did a fabulous job.

I also wanted to share another ACS accomplishment with you.  Mrs. Paul had our junior class write essays for a Missouri Electric Co-op essay contest to select delegates to the annual Youth Tour to Washington, DC.  We had 5 eligible juniors (due to their electric company) that submitted essays.  The top ten essays of the central Missouri region were selected, and from those the three top essay winners were invited to a special dinner and asked to do a speech to compete for the top honor.  One of our students, Ashton Allcorn was selected to attend the dinner and to compete for this top honor and she WON!  Ashton will be representing the central Missouri cooperative (as well as Applewood) on a whirlwind tour of the nation's capital June 13 - 18. The representatives tour museums, visit America's most cherished monuments and even meet their elected officials. The other two students received $300 scholarships and a trip to Jefferson City.  The remaining seven essay winners received a $100 scholarship to the college of their choice.  Of those seven spots four of those went to the remaining ACS juniors Duke Anderson, Melissa Backe, Kasey Blake, and Hannah Young.  What an accomplishment for Applewood to take five of the top ten awards!

It is always wonderful to get these affirmations that ACS is turning out great leaders for Christ.

    Yours in Christ,
    Pamela Young

Senior Meeting – Monday, April 27th at 3:30pm in the Green Room.

Applewood Clean Up Day – Saturday, May 2 beginning at 8:00am. We will be joining Maplewood church members in sprucing up the buildings and grounds we both use.  Students in grades 6 – 12 are expected to attend.  Parents are encouraged to join us.  Students in grades K – 5 are welcome to work alongside their parent.  This is an opportunity for ACS to give back to Maplewood in a small way.  We spend the morning cleaning the school desks, tables, and chairs.  We paint rooms that need to be painted, weed the gardens, and deep clean the kitchens.  So dress appropriately.  There is something for everyone to do!

Water back on!  The water is back to normal in the ROC.  Thanks to all the students for their patience.  Wednesday lunch will be as scheduled.

Mr. & Mrs. Nelson had a baby boy!  Samuel Michael Nelson was born on Sunday, April 26!
Yearbooks going out!  The yearbooks will be passed out to students tomorrow.

  • April 20 - 24

    Dear ACS Families,
Another great Prom has come and gone.  The students look forward to it for so long (my daughters got their dresses in Decemeber!) and then it is over.  The prom is an opportunity for the junior class to do something special for the seniors.  This year’s theme was Phantom Masquerade.  Anne Anderson and the junior parents did a great job creating a setting worth of a Phantom of the Opera production.  The food was wonderful and the students enjoyed a night of dancing and fellowship.  The parents had a great time as well and most of them found their way to the dance floor before the night was over.  All in all it was a very relaxed and enjoyable evening for everyone.   Wonderful memories were created and will be remembered when the pictures are passed around.     For anyone who may not be aware, ACS pictures of many of our events can be found at the following web site:  http://public.fotki.com/spbrh1983/  Password is “ACS”.  Be sure to check the picture web site to see how everyone looked.

  • Week of April 15 - 17

    Dear ACS Families,
I hope you all had a restful vacation.  It was a long stretch from Christmas to Easter and many of us needed the break, I know I did!  With only four and a half weeks left of school, we will be very busy.  There is so much to do to get ready for the end of the school year!
Testing went very well last week.  I was impressed with how fast our students completed their tests.  Once we have received the results we will send them out to you parents.
Soon the sun will come out and the weather will get nicer and thoughts will turn to summer and not school work.  Help me keep your students on track during these last few weeks.  It is so easy to let our homework slide when the weather is beautiful and we all would rather be outside.
Just a reminder about tuition.  In May we do not collect tuition but rather collect book fees for the 2009-2010 school year.  Book fees are $155.00 per student.  This allows us to order our books early and receive a discount.  Also in the month of June we collect tuition fees for September of the coming school year.  This enables us to plan our classes and budget, being certain of how many students we will have in each grade.
Thank you for your continued support of our teachers and administration as we complete this school year.

    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

Homeroom Moms! – I will need your help one last time in setting up the egg hunt.  Please be at the ROC office by 10:00am to hide eggs.  Pray that we don’t have rain!

April 22 Chapel – Our team that went to Honduras will be presenting a slide show and will talk about their time sharing Christ with the people of Honduras.  Everyone is welcome!

  • Week of March 23 - 27

    Hello ACS Families,
School is back to normal with all grades back in class.  Both mission teams had incredible experiences last week.
The local mission group assisted Birthright on Monday by moving all the articles for sale from their storage facility over to Our Savior Lutheran Church, then organized and priced the articles.  On Friday they assisted with the actual sale and then boxed up what ever was left over for the people at Open Door.  Mrs. Wester said that thanks to the ACS students, this year the set up went smoother than it had ever went before.  On Wednesday the group went to the Union City Mission in Kansas City.  There the students toured the facility, served lunch to homeless people, washed dishes, organized the large pantry where they store the food, cleaned out the vans that they use to pick people up, cleaned up the youth room, and made dinner that evening.  At the facility they met a family with 10 children.  The students were impressed with how polite and well behaved the children were.  The students are interested in returning again, perhaps this summer.
The Honduras team had a wonderful experience and took many pictures that are being organized into a slide show that will be shown at chapel on April 22nd.  On one day, the students had to hike a mountain to a village where they did a VBS program.  They toured a banana plantation another day.  They had a special evening set aside for the local missionaries and their families where they made a meal for them, Rhiannon did a special dance performance, Hannah clowned and made balloons, and the team fellowshipped and encouraged the missionaries.  For most of their stay, they held VBS classes and sports clinics for the students in the public schools.  They also constructed a house for a family.  The thing that stands out in the students minds is how fascinated the Honduran children were with all of them.  Many of the pictures I saw were of our students being surrounded by the children, playing with the children, and holding the children.
Hearing the stories of the students and their experiences encourages me.  ACS desires for our students to learn to share the gospel and give of themselves as servants for others.  Our students worked hard last week and they were blessed by their efforts.  They learned to rely heavily on God for their strength.  I pray that the lessons they have learned last week will stay with them always.

    Yours In Christ,
    Mrs. Young

  • March 16 - 20

    Hello ACS Family,

I am writing to you today from New Hampshire, where I am helping to pack my mother for her move to Missouri.  As such I will need to refer you to the office for many details of the week’s activities.

Mission team one is off to Honduras.  I heard that part of the group was on a plane that had a delay and they missed their connection.  They are in Honduras now after spending a night in Miami.  Please continue to pray for their safety and for the people of Honduras.  Mission team #2 begins their work tomorrow.  Please pray for these students to keep their focus and to prepare the hearts of the people that they will come into contact with.

This week your children came home wearing a bracelet of black, red, white, yellow, and green thread that they had been given during chapel.  This bracelet has two purposes.  One is that they are to wear it all the time because it will remind them to pray for the two mission teams.  The second is that with Easter coming soon we are focusing on the Resurrection.  For those who don’t know, these are the colors of the wordless book, an evangelistic tool that we use to help bring children to Christ.  Each color represents something in the gospel story:  black represents sin, red – the blood of Christ, white – the forgiveness of our sins, yellow – heaven, and green – the growth every Christian strives for by reading their Bible, going to church, and praying.  Please be sure to talk to your children about the significance of their bracelet and encourage them to wear it and pray for their fellow ACS students.

God bless you all.  See you next week!

    Mrs. Young

  • Week of March 9 - 13

    Hello Parents,
This weekend was full of events that showcased the talents talents that God has gifted our students’ with.  Friday evening was awards night for basketball season.  While we were waiting for the participants to arrive, my husband played the slide show from the 2005 basketball season.  It is amazing how far our sports teams have come!  We owe that to the many dedicated parents that not only keep out sports program running but to those who help to build it to be better each year.
Saturday evening we enjoyed the 2nd annual Student Council Talent Show.  It is always a joy for me to see students push beyond their comfort zones and do something that they did not think they could do.
Events such as these make the difference between ACS just being a school and being a family.  It is during events like these that parents get to sit together, have coffee and visit with another parent they may not know.  The kids also enjoy the opportunity to see their friends outside of the classroom.
This Saturday, ACS is hosting a special social for Elementary students (grades K – 5) and their parents.  I encourage you not to miss this evening.  I have been promised that their will be fun for everyone.  This also gives elementary parents a chance to get to know other parents you may not have met.
What makes a school a family?  It is the closeness of the families involved.

    Yours In Christ,
    Pamela Young
