Hello ACS Family, God has blessed us with a beautiful icy world. He also gave us a snow day to enjoy and give us a chance to ease back into school again. As a native of New Hampshire this week has been very enjoyable for me. It brings back memories of walking to school with snow banks so high you felt like you lived in world of white tunnels. (Of course everything is larger when you are in elementary school). Yes students, Mrs. Crosier and I did actually walk to school in the winter and had to go up a hill both ways. I had also forgotten how quiet it is when you stand outside as the snow is falling. God’s peace just settles down around you along with the downy flakes. Then you wake up the next morning and the world is covered in white and looks so clean and fresh. Of course it has been a challenge keeping my feathered friends fed during this time where all other sources of food are covered up. The “Young Diner” has been in full operation with feeders being refilled several times a day. Our back deck looks like a set from Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds”, with several squirrels thrown in as extras. I pray that this weekend you take a new look at the wonder of snow.
With a thankful heart, Mrs. Young
"Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind." Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley 1925

Merry Christmas ACS Family! I hope that everyone had a restful and memorable Christmas vacation. This year, more than ever, I was keenly aware of the importance of family during the holidays. My husband Scott worked during Christmas so my daughters and I left on Christmas day to drive two days to Tampa, Florida to be with my son, Ben, and his wife who are stationed at McDill Air Force Base. Along the way we were able to see my brother and his family in Atlanta, Georgia; pick up Scott; and see my mother-in-law and sister-in-law and their families in northern Florida. We stayed three days, dropped Scott off at the nearest airport, and drove another two days to get home. It was freezing in Florida, and though we did not get the tan we were hoping for, we all felt that nothing was as important as the time we spent together.
I pray that you and your family appreciated the time spent with family and friends during this holiday season.
With a thankful heart, Mrs. Young

Happy December ACS Families!
One more week and it will be Christmas vacation. Many of the teachers are finishing up with tests and projects this week. It is important for students to get all of their work completed before the holiday season. This week will also be filled with fun as we anticipate celebrating our savior’s birth. The student’s did a great job putting on the Christmas program last Thursday. It was just the thing I needed to get my heart looking towards Christmas. The kindergarteners, second grade, and high school also spent time this last week ringing bells for the Salvation Army. From all accounts, our little ones did an excellent job wishing people a “Merry Christmas” and saying “thank you” and were very hard for people to resist, so they gave generously.
Mrs. Harshner came up with a great idea to help us build the excitement of the coming holiday, each day this week we will have a spirit day centered on a Christmas carol.
Monday, Dec. 14th --- “Merry & Bright” - dress in bright colors
Wednesday, Dec. 16th --- “Oh Holy Night” – dress in Christian t-shirts, hats, etc.
Friday, Dec. 18th --- “Deck the Halls” - dress up in Christmas attire, tinsel, Santa hats, etc.
Don’t forget that all gifts need to be in on Wednesday in preparation for Friday’s festivities. Friday, each family needs to bring in a snack to share. (For further info on these two items, look at past bulletins).
The teachers are requesting that in lieu of thank you gifts, that monetary donations be brought to the office for Open Door. Along with the donation, we will have you fill out a message of gratitude to your student’s teacher. The messages will be attached to a piece of candy and delivered on Friday during the party. Teachers will appreciate the encouragement and know that those in need will be well cared for by their parent’s generosity.
Friday, school will start at 8:00 as usual, and end at noon. We will not be having lunch. Home room moms, be sure to be at school by 8:00. The day will be filled with food, fun, and fellowship. Following school, students in grades K – 6 will be performing at the Stoney Ridge nursing home and bringing joy to the people there. (Instructions below).
May you feel surrounded by God’s love this week.
Mrs. Young
"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." Matt 1:23
Announcements:
Congratulations to Mrs. Porter whose high bid gave her the opportunity to purchase the Avon gift basket. That money is greatly appreciated by the 8th grade Boston group.
Stoney Ridge instructions. Student need to meet Mrs. Harshner at Stoney Ridge by 1:45. Students can wear their holiday clothes that they wore to school that day. Please be sure to feed them lunch before they come. The performance is 2:00 – 2:30 and parents are welcome to attend. Stoney Ridge is located on Hwy 65 north of Sedalia on the street to Bothwell Lodge. For further instructions or directions call Mrs. Harshner at 829-2470.
Don’t forget that the Mission team is selling Christmas cookie jar mixes until Dec. 16. Order forms were sent to family email addresses. Prices range from $5.00-$9.50 a jar.
As you are cleaning up for the holidays remember that the Mission Team is looking for donations for their garage sale in January.
Needs:
As you unwrap presents this year don’t throw out any large cardboard boxes. We like to have them in the AWANA room for the elementary students to build into house and tunnels during the winter months when they can’t go outside.
The ACS School Board is now taking applications for Administrative positions for the 2010-2011 school year. Please submit your resume indicating if your interests lie with High School, Elementary, or both, to the ACS office c/o Jennifer Boatright, ACS School Board President. Applications will be accepted until December 23, 2009.
Praise and Prayer:
Thanks to all the teachers who put on the Christmas performance: Mrs. Leon for her work with the 8th grade drama class; Mrs. Church for working with the Praise Team; and Mrs. Harshner for her work with grades K – 6 in music.
Please be in prayer for one of our alumni, Katie Allcorn Lotz, as she goes into surgery Dec. 16.

Hello ACS Parents, It is hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner. Every year Christmas seems to catch me unaware. It concerns me that life is so hectic that I am unable to stop and concentrate on the meaning of the season. Each year the shopping gets done, some of the baking gets done, and the Christmas cards never get out the door. Before I know it, Christmas is over and I am wondering where it went. As the days tick by in December, I encourage you to stop the merry-go-round of life, get off and take the time to appreciate the most precious gift that has ever been given to the world. Emmanuel, God with us, came to the earth in the form of a baby to save us all.
One of the things that always helps me to put things into proper perspective at this time of the year is the ACS Christmas program. Seeing the children worshipping God in song, and in sign language is sure to touch my heart greatly. Join me this Thursday evening at 7:00pm in the sanctuary as we celebrate our savior’s birth.
“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11
In thankfulness for the season, Mrs. Young

Two of our student groups, the Boston Group (students from grade 8 that go on a history field trip to Boston in the summer) and the Mission Group (students from grades 9 – 12 that are going on a mission trip to Costa Rico this spring) will be raising money for their respective trips. Boston Trip Fund Raiser: They will be having a silent auction for a gift basket of Avon products at the Christmas program.
Mission Trip Fund Raisers: Lorna Sparks is coordinating a spa fund raiser. Contact at her to schedule a spa for you and your friends.
Tanjie Walton is organizing a yard sale to be held in January. Donations would be greatly appreciated.
Brenda Allcorn is organizing a Christmas cookie jar sale. Students will take orders for cookie mix in a jar. Cost from $5 - $9.50 per jar. Orders must be in by Dec. 16 to be delivered by Christmas.
The Pettis County Health Center contacted ACS to let families know that they are taking appointments to get vaccines for the H1N1 flu. They stated that the CDC speculates that there could be two additional waves in which the H1N1 flu will heavily affect our population. The most at risk age groups are school age groups. This is opposite the regular seasonal flu where seniors are affected the most.

Parents, this has been a busy week for Applewood Christian School. The Parent-Teacher Conference was a success with only one family not able to attend. It is always a wonderful opportunity for me to get to sit down with the parents of my students and brag on their strengths and give suggestions for improving on their weaknesses.
Many of our high school students went to Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO for the 2009 SBU/ACSI College Preparatory Championships. The SBU/ACSI CPC is one of the premier academic competitions for Christian schools in the Midwest. All Christian high schools are invited to participate and are divided into a large and small school division (based on enrollment). The students represented us well! We earned second place overall in the Small School division! The Lady Mustangs won first place in the basketball shoot-out. And the following awards were received by individual students: Music Competition – Best of Show Kate Herrington (gr.9) Academic Competiton: English (grammar) test – 1st Place Melissa Backe (gr.12) English (grammar) test – 5th Place Ashton Allcorn (gr. 12) Art Competition: 1st Place Hannah Young (gr. 12) 2nd Place Katie Rieckhoff (gr. 9) 4th Place Hannah Young (gr. 12) 6th Place Katie Rieckhoff (gr. 9)
Many of the other students did very well on their academic testing though they did not score high enough for an award. We are very proud of all of you!
This Wednesday is the Thanksgiving Feast. The Feast has become a tradition at ACS and is a fond memory for many of the families that have passed through ACS. Cindy Barrett, one of the founding members, said that it began 21 yrs. as an opportunity to celebrate the holiday with “family” as each of the three families lived away from their extended family. The Feast carries on that tradition by asking ACS families to invite family and friends to join together in Thanksgiving for the things that God has blessed Applewood with throughout the year. Many of our alumni and their families come back to join in the celebration. The program begins at 11:30 with dinner starting around noon. We look forward to sharing thankful hearts with all of you.
With thanksgiving, Mrs. Young
“Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.” Psalm 105:1

Hello ACS Parents! Tomorrow night is our Parent-Teacher Conferences. Beginning at 6pm, ACS teachers will be manning their table (arranged in alphabetical order) and be ready to visit with parents from each student. As you enter the ROC, students will be there to hand you your students’ report cards. Then feel free to have a seat in the middle chairs and look them over. Visiting with the teachers is on a first-come-first-served basis. When you see that your teacher is free, run on over to their table and have a seat. These conferences are a wonderful time for parents and teachers to get to know each other a little better and for parents to get a complete picture about how their child is doing in a particular class. We hope that this also aids in the parent-teacher relationship; once you get to know your student’s teacher you will be more comfortable calling them when you have a concern. As I mentioned in the letter enclosed with the Parent-Teacher surveys, conference time is not the appropriate place to work out serious conflicts, however, it is the place to make an appointment with the teacher for a later opportunity where the two of you will not be interrupted or limited in time.
Things to bring with you: completed Parent-Teacher surveys (sent out last week) and the list of your student’s classes and teachers (so that you know who to talk to).
We will also have a table where you can pick up helpful hints for home schooling your student on Tuesday & Thursday. And we encourage you to stop by the Lost & Found and see if you recognize anything. Any items not claimed will go to the Salvation Army.
Tomorrow night should be a great event for everyone! Speaking of great events, the totals are in! We raised $5,900.00 at the fund raising dinner last Saturday! In addition, we had 7 couples interested in receiving more information about ACS for their children, 2 individuals who are interested in volunteering their time at ACS, and one individual who is starting a Christian school who is interested in coming to observe us.
Announcements:
Mission Trip. Ron Jobe will meet with all parents & students who are interested in the mission trip that will take place this spring. The meeting will be Nov. 19th at 7pm at the school, and the exact location will be announced as soon as I find out where we can meet. This will be a good opportunity to ask all the questions you have concerning the trip. Fund raising will be discussed.
Please turn in your Thanksgiving Feast forms so we can have a total for the organizers to purchase food. Students grades 4 – 12! MAACS Fine Arts Competition form went out Friday. If you did not get one, pick one up at the office. All Students in Grades 4 -12 need to fill this out to indicate what they want to compete in for MAACS or choose to do a research paper. Hello ACS Parents! The Fund Raising Dinner is over for another year and what a success it was! Dr. Hinkle’s message was a sobering one delivered with much humor. He was not only enjoyable but gave me much to think on. There are many folks that I would like to thank for the success of the event:
• Thank you to Mrs. Deanna Nelson, who was the creative brains behind this event. From the trees to the beautiful table decorations Deanna, you had the vision! • Thank you to Mrs. Mabry who helped Mrs. Nelson. We’ve hit the big time, our school name is on a pen! • Thank you to Matt Boatright for his incredible job as MC of the evening. Matt, I am so glad you can think quickly on your feet! Also thanks to Mr. Boatright for getting the speaker and for getting our donations to cover the cost of the dinner. • Thank you to the individuals that gave testimonies on ACS. Their messages gave prospective parents and even some of our parents with young children many reasons for sending their children to ACS. • Parents, thank you for all of your efforts inviting people to attend the event and for hosting your tables. The desserts looked marvelous! • Thank you to my sister Paula Crosier and her kitchen staff (Terry & Jacinda Wassam, Pam & Scott Breid, Vonna Hogan, Kari & Randy Thomas & Thom Crosier) who cooked for two days. The dinner was incredible! It is obvious which sister was given the talent for cooking. • Thank you to Mrs. Leon and the 6th grade for their awesome production of “Avarice”. I have to tell you Dharma, I’ve been a bit nervous the past couple weeks with the pounding of those sticks. As usual, you delivered a top quality product. I would also like to recognize the beautiful voice that we heard in the dark that belonged to sophomore Noel Porter. Noel, sorry I forgot to put your name in the program. • Thanks to Jeff and Kasey Blake for doing sound and lights for the drama presentation and the Praise Team. Microphones are one of those things I always take forgranted. • Thanks to Mrs. Koeller and the art students for the wonderful job on the trees. We hope to keep them up for the Thanksgiving Feast so that everyone has a chance to see them. • Thanks to Mrs. Allcorn who contacted the alumni for their information and pictures. • Thanks to my students, grades 7 -12, for serving. I know I expect a lot of you but you never disappoint me. • Thanks to Mrs. Church & the Praise Team for the good job they did and for being willing to play as much or as little as I wanted them to. • Thanks to Dr. Boatright for sharing a table with me and taking the pressure of coming up with a dessert off my shoulders. Thanks Jen! • Thanks to my admin staff, Gay & Lorna, who did a lot of the behind the scenes work, including the pestering of parents and the tracking down of alumni. Their job is often very undesirable yet they press on because I need them to do it. Thanks ladies for never saying “no”.
Needless to say there are many folks I am very grateful for this weekend. There are so many other people that have uplifted me this week in countless small ways, you are no less important to me.
Next week’s bulletin will have an update on the results of the envelopes.
Yours in Christ, Mrs. Young

Dear Applewood Parents, Thank you so much for your participation in inviting individuals to the fundraiser dinner on Saturday night. Now it is time to call them and remind them of the dinner at 6 pm, if you have not talked to them recently. Just a reminder, this is an adult event so please make arrangements for child care. We will not have any child care available at the school. We also want to ask you to please bring the following: 8 Dinner plates 8 Dessert plates 8 Glasses & 8 Coffee Cups (mugs) 8 Forks, knives, spoons, & dessert forks 1 Casserole Dish for main course (has gravy on it) 2 Serving Bowls (potatoes & vegetable) 3 Serving spoons for above Please bring them in a cardboard box marked with your name. The school will be supplying napkins, table cloths, and centerpieces. Also, please do not forget to bring your dessert, which should be enough to feed eight people, even if you did not obtain eight people to fill your table. Some Applewood families received more than eight reservations (thanks!), and we will be merging some tables together. Please plan to be at the school no later than 5:15 pm so that you may set up your table and to greet your guests. You will be assigned a student server for your table that can help you get your table ready. Your table will have a large envelope with name tags for your guests to wear, instructions for setting the table, and donation cards & envelopes to set at each place. After the donation portion of the evening, you will collect the donation envelopes and place them in the large table envelope which is turned in at the end of the evening. When you are finished eating, please scrape food into one plate and pile everything else together. Your waiter will then take the plates away and place them in your box to go home. At the conclusion of the evening, we ask that you wait until all your guests depart. Then pick up your table. Please help us in returning the tables and chairs to their necessary places for Maplewood to hold church services the following day. Thank you again so much for your good attitude and cooperation in this endeavor to “get the word out” about Applewood to our community! If you have any questions about the evening and what is expected of you, please do not hesitate to call me at 829-1599. Please pray that the Lord blesses the evening!
God bless you!
Mrs. Young

Parents should make arrangements at that time to get the Absentee Homework Assignment Sheet. Failure to notify the school of the student’s absence may result in no credit for classes that met on that particular day.
B. Students are allowed one school day for each school day they are absent to make up work. It is the student’s responsibility to see that work is completed and turned in.
C. If a student is sick on a Tuesday or Thursday, a note from the parent is required stating that the child was sick and could not do homework. The same homework make up policy applies.
D. Doctor’s notes may be required for students who are absent two or more days in a row.

Happy Fall! This is my favorite time of year. The leaves are falling and many of God’s creation is settling down for a long nap (I wish I was one of them). We just finished a great week of fun and information about the dangers of drugs. We saw many great outfits throughout the week, especially Friday when each class was able to choose their own theme against drugs. We saw a new side to the ninth grade class as they did a fantastic job all looking like nerds that day. Christine and Hannah did a great job as well educating us about the hazards of the “legal drugs” of drinking alcohol and smoking. We are all working hard to prepare for the upcoming fund raising dinner. Mrs. Nelson, with the assistance of Mrs. Mabry, has been busy putting all the plans together. She is asking that all families turn in their table guest roster tomorrow (Monday, Oct. 26) so they can assess the amount of tables and food that will be needed. Mrs. Leon has been practicing with the 6th grade, they are doing a drama piece that involves sticks and black lights. I can’t wait to see what they are up to! Mrs. Koeller and her art students are working on creating two large trees to cover the walls that will showcase the photos that Mr. Greer just took of all the students and staff. With all this work being done, I am excited to see what God will do on November 7th!
Have a great week! Mrs. Young

Hello ACS Parents, Stop the world and let me off! Don’t many of us feel that way these days? Between school, sports, church, and family commitments, there never seems to be enough time in the day. Family dinners are on the run or not at all. What is quality family time anyway; does being in the car together count? And where does family devotion time fit in? It is all we can do to help our kids get their school work done and do a load of laundry once in awhile. Let me encourage you. As a mom with one senior left at home, I often ask myself if I have taught Hannah everything she needs to know to prepare her for college and life on her own. In the midst of school, volleyball games, and college searches, I find myself looking back on my life with my children and I realize that learning moments come in many shapes and sizes. Whether we talk to our children at home at the dinner table, in the car, or snuggled together on the couch, we can use these snippets of time to teach our children about the important things in life; character, relationships, and mostly God. As a Christian parent it is important to choose activities for our children wisely and to keep a balance so that our family is home long enough to have down time and draw strength for the next day. Above all, keep God as a priority over all things, your children will know easily if He is the most important part of your life or not.
Keep up the good work! Mrs. Young
“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.” Deuteronomy 11: 18 – 21
Announcements: ACS College & Career night – Thursday, Oct. 15 at 8pm. So you want to know if there is life after high school? Be sure to attend this very informative briefing. Students unable to attend need to bring a note to the office.

Hello ACS Parents, This was an exciting weekend for our varsity soccer and volleyball teams as we attended the Christian Fellowship Tournament in Columbia. Though the second day was rained out, our soccer team fought hard in two grueling games on Friday. The volleyball team played their best and earned the top ranked spot in their division in pool play on Friday. On Saturday they played hard to earn the third place overall in the tournament.
Throughout the weekend, God was sending the Volleyball players a message that came out in their devotion time loud and clear:
“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me.” Jeremiah 9:24
Their focus was on glorifying God those two days and being content in whatever the outcome was of each game. Their focus surely paid off because they not only came home with the third place trophy but the most important award to any Christian team, the Sportsmanship Award. Great job Mustangs and Lady Mustangs! We are so proud of you!
