Parents, It is hard to believe that there is only three more weeks of school left! It is pretty busy around here trying to finalize one school year and making preparations for the next. Student Council Elections were held this week. The following individuals represent our student leadership for next year: President - Drew Wedemeyer, Vice-President – Mariah Wassam, Treasurer – Kirstin Bergman, Secretary – Savannah Crosier, and Sentinels – Mary Drenon & Katie Wassam. Congratulations to our new student leaders! The “Big Bad Musical” is being performed this Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 5pm. The fairy tale creatures have put the big bad wolf on trial for being “big” and “bad”. Come see this fractured fairy tale with your family and you be the jury. Is the wolf innocent or guilty? Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for children, and $1.00 off if you come in a fairy tale costume. In the next coming weeks we will be working to interview new families for the few student openings we have left. We will also be looking to fill teacher positions and parent job positions long held by many of our older families. If you have not signed up for your parent job for next year, please do so soon. We will be offering new families any positions not filled at the time of their interview. Continue to pray for the teachers, students, and administration as this school year comes to a close that we would all end the year doing our best. Please also be in prayer for the new administration, Mrs. Herrington & Mrs. Church as they have already begun the job of planning for the new school year. In Christ, Mrs. Young

Parents, What a great time we had at the prom this weekend! The prom committee did a wonderful job decorating the Woman’s Building at the State Fair grounds into a beautiful Asian ballroom. The students and parents both had a fun time eating Chinese food, dancing, and visiting. What we were not expecting was that Smith-Cotton also had their prom that night in the building next to ours. The Sheriff’s cars and metal detectors made a sharp contrast to our prom where the worst we had to worry about was one of the parents hurting themselves while dancing! The students next door would probably have been horrified to learn that there were just as many parents as there were students at our prom. It made me proud to think that our kids enjoy spending time with us and can have fun even with mom & dad in their presence. It gives me hope for the future. In Christ, Mrs. Young

Hello Parents, The Parent Appreciation dinner put on by the Student Council members Saturday night was a wonderful event! The high school students discussed the idea of giving back to the parents and came up with an evening of dinner, music, games, and fellowship. Senior Kasey Blake came up with the idea and was head cook of the evening. Her chicken fettuccini alfredo was the best I have ever tasted! Dinner was a relaxed event with parents visiting and getting to know the other parents. After dessert many of the parents stayed to play games. A rambunctious game of “farkle” was soon underway while I preferred the more cut throat card game of “hand-and-foot”. Throughout the night we were treated to “old school” music as our DJ termed it (we used to call them “oldies”). Though less than a half of the families were represented that night, it was a tremendous success for those that attended. Thank you students for thinking of us moms and dads!

Hello Parents & Students, Our trips to MAACS went well. We were able to see students do amazing speeches and wondrous, musical pieces. We were impressed and inspired by works of art made of different things from clay to puzzle pieces. Our students did an excellent job being quiet and respectful when watching performances. They represented our school and our God with excellence and looked great doing it! The trips back and forth on the bus were enjoyable for the students and for me. Despite the benefits of MAACS, this event, more than any other we do, tends to bring out the worst in us. We moan and groan over the dress code. We see their rules as too strict; we label them as “legalistic” and therefore feel they do not deserve to be followed. We look for ways to “cheat” the system instead of recognizing that these are directives from the authority over us that we are called to obey. Instead of looking at this as an opportunity, we complain about why we shouldn’t be participating. Unfairness of the judging is a common complaint. Stories about past grievances have become legendary and are allowed to color our view about competing. We whine that the school is making us participate at all. Instead of facing the challenge we are given and working to the best of our abilities, we choose to do something that takes the least amount of effort so that we can say that we did our part. Parents, what are we teaching our children? Are we teaching them to obey their authority figures, and therefore obey God? Or are we teaching them to obey only when it is convenient or when it coincides with what we want to do? Pray about this, I know I have.
In Christ, Mrs. Young
“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” Romans 13:1-7

Dear Parents & Students, We are in our final quarter of the school year. Where did the time go? We need to be on guard that spring fever, senioritis, or just plain laziness doesn’t set in as we round the final turn to the end of this school year. It is easy to let the warm weather (?), the impending summer vacation, graduation, or our sin nature to influence us to slack off on our efforts to learn and to teach. It is important to finish strong by doing our best right up until May 13th; whether you are a principal, a teacher, a student, or a parent. Let’s all work hard to make the most of these last two months of school!
In Christ, Mrs. Young

I was reminded of something this weekend - the importance of prayer. I just spent three days in Omaha, Nebraska at the Christian Home School regional basketball tournament. After both the girls and the boys lost their first game on Thursday evening and I was dealing with the disappointment my daughter was feeling, the Holy Spirit reminded me that I had not been praying for this event. Even though winning the tournament was extremely important to my daughter, I had failed to pray for their success or their safety, focusing instead on praying for the Costa Rica mission trip. Later when we were transporting the students going to Costa Rica from the tournament to the hotel in St. Louis, one of the vans stopped working. After the group prayed for the vehicle, it was able to be started up again. Does your busyness get in the way of your prayer time? John Wesley explains the correlation between busyness and prayer this way. “I have so much to do that I spend several hours in prayer before I am able to do it.” We need to remember that no matter how busy our life is, that prayer is essential for every success, be it a basketball game, a mission trip, or the completion of our day. Prayer should be an action we undertake each day to prepare us for the next day not a reaction to the events in our lives. Writer Chip Brogden explained the importance of prayer this way: “If God will do whatever He wishes, regardless of whether we pray or not, then we do not need to pray at all, and the Lord's instructions on praying for the Kingdom and the Will are superfluous. But the truth is that God waits for a Remnant to rise up and to pray in agreement with His Purpose before He does anything - He will do nothing apart from the Church. Apart from HIM, we CAN do nothing; apart from US, He WILL do nothing.”
In Christ, Mrs. Young

Hello Parents, There is never any question of what is the next holiday coming up, one merely needs to go to Wal-Mart and travel down the aisle set aside for holiday items. Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Now this is one holiday I cannot forget, as God gifted me with a very special Valentine’s Day present eighteen years ago in my youngest daughter Hannah.
The origin of St. Valentine is still a mystery and is surrounded by legend. To the best of our knowledge, Valentinus was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius II around 269AD. He was caught marrying Christian couples and aiding Christians who were being persecuted under Emperor Claudius in Rome. Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor -- whereupon he was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs, stoned, and then beheaded. One legend says, while awaiting his execution, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer's blind daughter. Another legend says, on the eve of his death, he penned a farewell note to the jailer's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine."
Whatever the true nature of the story, St. Valentine reminds us that this day is set apart to remember those we love. One of the students asked me last week if they “had to give Valentine’s cards”. The giving of cards or gifts should always be a choice, never an obligation. I challenged the students to let this holiday be a time where they tell their teachers and friends that they care about them. There has got to be someone at ACS that makes your day better just by being a part of it. Make sure you tell that person how much they mean to you whether it is with a card, a picture you have drawn, or just a word and a smile.
“This is my command: Love each other.” John 15:17
With gratitude & love for all of you, Mrs. Young
Announcements: School wide Valentine’s Party – This Thursday, Feb. 11 from 1:00 – 3:00pm at Jester’s Bowling alley on Hwy 65 south of Lincoln. Cost is $2.50/student for bowling, all other games are additional. Siblings, friends, and of course parents are welcome to attend. We are asking that each family bring a snack to share. Students with last names beginning with A - M; please bring a sweet snack to share. Those with last names beginning with N - Z, please bring a healthy snack. Parents, please contact Mrs. Young if your student is unable to attend. Students will only have math and reading homework so that they can go to the party.
Send a friend a lollipop for Valentine’s Day! The students going on the Boston Field Trip will be selling lollipops to be delivered on Friday, Feb. 12th. The lollipops will sell for $1.00 each. Be sure to write a special message for us to attach. Orders will be taken during Opening and lunch this Monday and Wednesday or see one of the 8th graders. Parents can call in their order and send money into the office.
Valentine’s Cards – On Friday, Feb. 12th the students will be exchanging Valentine’s Day cards with their friends and teachers. Students are not required to send a card to every student in the school but if they want to, please have your student merely sign the cards and not address them to anyone in particular as it makes passing out the cards much easier. An updated roster was sent home with your student last week so that students know the correct spelling of the other students and teachers. Students are welcome to bring treats for their friends on that day.
Teacher intent forms went out last week. They are due in the office this week. Parents who are interested in teaching for next year need to pick up an application in the office. Also, if you know of anyone outside the ACS family that would be interested in teaching, please let the office know or pick them up an application. Just a reminder, teachers must be Christians.
The student Consideration for Reapplication form is due in the office. Please be sure to get yours in. If you are not sure what your plans are, please just say that on the form.

Reminder to parents. If you turn in a lunch form after the deadline, you MUST call Mrs. Crosier and let her know. Do not send your child to school without a lunch if you have not done so! Last week we had 10 students show up expecting a lunch and their parents had not submitted a form or had done so that very morning. The seniors buy the food the night before and do not buy a lot of extra. There was a shortage that day. What was even more discouraging was seeing those students whose parents had not submitted a form, throw away their lunch, knowing that there were seniors that had to go without their lunch because they sacrificed it for that student. In the future, we will call parents to bring a lunch out for any student that has not paid for their lunch.
High School students not going on the Costa Rica mission trip. Mrs. Lansing has set up a local mission for you! You will be going to the Christian Activity Center in St. Louis, IL on March 11 & 12. You will be working with young children tutoring and playing games, as well as some light cleaning and preparing a meal. You will be staying over night at a local church. More information will follow this week.
Praise and Prayer I just want to give a big THANK YOU to you all for another successful carnival. There were those that decorated, donated things, all the baking of cakes, etc., picking up gold fish, chips, and pizzas, last minute runs to the store for forgotten things, taking a Saturday to set up and clean up, and the list goes on and on. It's hard right now to know exactly the amount of profit made, but I deposited about $2200 in the bank this morning. We just have a few minor expenses so I'd say this is the best carnival yet. Congratulations to everyone and I appreciate you all. Mrs. Cloud, student council advisor

Dear ACS Parents & Students, What a great time we had at the carnival this year! The senior’s version of “Applewood Idol” was definitely a hit. Mr. Bergman did a great job rapping and who knew Mrs. Harshner could sing like an angel. The whooping and hollering could be heard 10 miles away when Mrs. Leon started salsa dancing during her song. Another new event this year was the Jail. For $1.00 a minute you could put your best friend, your parents, or your teacher in jail. Personally, I enjoyed my 5 minutes of confinement, it was quiet in there. And of course everyone enjoyed the Pie-In-The-Face contest. People were willing to pay $220 for new student Brady Herrington to get a pie! I’m thankful that the students saw fit to make sure Mr. Bergman got a pie and not me. Thanks to the Student Council and their advisors, Mr. & Mrs. Cloud. It was a fun evening for everyone and they were able to raise $1,300!
I also wanted to say “well done” to our staff of the Beacon. This issue was jam packed with information. Of course my favorite part was the letters to me on page 5. Thanks students! I really appreciate the kind things you said. I love you all! Yes, even the students whose letters were quickly shredded for fear I would see them. LOL. I do need to apologize though; I gave incorrect dates to Hannah when she interviewed me. I was the assistant principal under Mrs. Wedemeyer from Aug. 2002 – May 2005. Well the year isn’t over yet, and there are many more memories still to make.
With a thankful heart, Mrs. Young

Mr. Bergman is uncertain of his future plans. Stay tuned to hear from him!
Announcements It’s Carnival Time! Saturday evening at 6:00pm. This is a night put on by the Student Council for the younger ACS students and their families. Come for dinner and to play. There are games like the cake walk, football toss, golf, and the Big Boy Bash. There are special activities like face painting, the Moon bounce, and the pie-in-the-face contest. We will have great food like homemade desserts and chili. The special event of the evening is ACS seniors’ version of American Idol! Invite friends and neighbors, everyone is welcome! Help our student council raise funds for items like sports mats for the walls and supporting the mission team to Costa Rica while having a night of fun for the whole family.
Pie-in-the-face Contest – Students bring in your money Monday to put on students and teachers to get a pie in the face during the Carnival. Parents, please monitor the money your child brings in. We don’t want anyone emptying their bank without mom & dad knowing. It is a fun event, even for those who get the pie, I should know!
Family Club meeting – Monday at 3:40 in the green room.
Report Cards went home Friday. Please be sure to review them, sign, and return them to the office.
Family Intent Letter - It is time to tell us what your plans are for next year so that we can make plans for class size and know how many openings we will have for new students. This form went out in the report cards Friday. Please fill them out and return them to the office.
Changes to the Directory – Parents please review your family information in the directory that was given to you during the Kick-off for any changes that need to be made. If you have misplaced it, please review the information on the web site. Any changes need to be called into the office so that we can print an updated directory for second semester.
Praise and Prayer Kudos to the Boston Trip team and some of the students going on the Costa Rica mission trip! These students were servers for the Founder’s Day Dinner Saturday night at Bothwell Hotel put on by the Sedalia Historical Society. They not only raised $400 that will be divided between these 2 groups but they impressed the guests with their efficiency and friendliness. So to Erin Cloud, Allison Cormican, Meredith Crosier, Miranda Crosier, Kinser Hogan, Anthony Koeller, Sophia Marsh, Emalea Rieckhoff, Jacquelyn Sims, Cody Capps, Kirstin Bergman, Drew Wedemeyer, Duke Anderson, and Hannah Young – a job well done! A special thanks to Katie Rieckhoff, Kasey Blake, and Mrs. Wedemeyer, who are not on either team, but gladly answered my call for help and were willing to fill in for other students.
Needs We need parents who are willing to be on our list of substitute teachers. Friday, I had 6 teachers out! That does not happen often but it would be helpful if I had a pool of names to draw from.

Dear ACS Family, The School Board requested that I pass some good news on to you. Mrs. Michal Herrington and Mrs. Deborah Church have been accepted as co-administrators for the 2010-2011 school year. I am thrilled that these two women have felt led by God to take this position. I believe they are the right people for our school as we go into this new decade. Mrs. Herrington is a strong leader who brings a vast amount of experience in administration. Mrs. Church will provide continuity, and her gift of understanding people will smooth over any difficulties with the change in leadership. Mrs. Mindy Rehmer will also be helping the administration as an elementary consultant. She will be taking over for Mrs. Paul in the area of testing and will do our kindergarten testing in house. Since the board’s announcement that they were taking applications for the position of principal, many people have asked me questions about why I am no longer going to be principal; whether or not I am still planning on teaching; and what I am planning on doing with myself. Let me answer those for everyone now. As most of you know, my youngest child, Hannah is a senior this year and will be going off to college next year. With both daughters in college and my son and daughter-in-law stationed in Tampa, FL, I have felt a strong desire to have the flexibility to be available for my children when they need me. The job of administrator is an all-encompassing one, and it is difficult to get away from school even for one day, let alone a week. Also, two years ago my husband went from being in the military to working for the airlines – from 12-hour work days to being gone half the week. Frankly, I miss him, and when he is home, I would like to be able to spend some time with him. So what am I planning to do with myself? The first thing will be to clean my house from top to bottom, as it really needs a thorough cleaning. It has been ignored way too long. I also need to establish some kind of exercise program for myself and Hannah’s 130 lb. German shepherd, Dakota. Both of us have gained too much weight these past couple of years. Next, I will try to put a dent in the pile of fabric I have collected over the years and sew a few quilts. All that said, I am the type of person that can not stay idle too long, or I go crazy. So I plan on still teaching biology for ACS, that way I can be around to answer questions for Mrs. Herrington and Mrs. Church. I also enjoy the students way too much to leave completely. I also plan on mobilizing some of the “friends of Applewood” that would like to help our school out but don’t know where they can plug in. There is always much to do around our school without having set working hours. What about Mr. Bergman? Well, I do not want to answer for him so I will let him tell you himself. Look for his note in next week’s bulletin.
In gratitude, Mrs. Young

Raising funds for Haiti – Jethro Christopherson’s wife Patti is getting a group together to bake lasagna and sell meals for area businesses this Thursday. She is looking for volunteers to cook, serve meals, deliver meals, and clean up. The money raised will go to Global Outreach (the organization that Ron Jobe works with) and Agape Flights (a Christian flight organization that brings supplies into Haiti). Individuals interested in helping Patti raise funds for these organizations to help the people of Haiti, can contact her at 829-0377. Or if you are interested in purchasing a lasagna meal for $5.00.
Annual Carnival put on by the Student Council. Jan. 30th at the ROC. This year I hear the special put on by the seniors is going to be called “ACS Idol”.
Mat Chapman, a student that attended ACS several years back, is presently stationed in Mosul, Iraq. Mrs. Wedemeyer is organizing a care package to be sent to him. For those that would like to send something in the package, call Mrs. Wedemeyer.
Praise and Prayer: Thanks to everyone who donated items for the garage sale. Thanks to Mrs. Walton and Mrs. Cloud for organizing the event and for pricing most of the items. Thanks to the Herringtons for the use of their trailer. We raised $784.40 towards sending the mission team to Costa Rica!
Praise to God for the safety of the Junior High on our trip home from the field trip!
