  • August 6 Bulletin

    Hello ACS Family!

It’s hard to believe that the summer is almost over and another school year will soon begin.  We had a great time at the pool party!  Parents were visiting and students stayed in the pool until the very last minute.  The youngest ones really enjoyed it when it got dark and the lights came on in the pool.

    The following announcements were made:

Directory – Tammy Price has been updating the school directory.
If your family has had any changes in phone, email, or address since last year.  Please give Tammy a call at 827-0532 and give her your updates.

Parent Jobs – Monica Triplett is in charge of parent jobs this year.  She will be sending out a letter with a list of the jobs that are available to each family.  She will be calling each family to see where your talents can be utilized.

Family Club Meeting – Tuesday, Aug 7 at 6:30.  They will be electing new officers.

Sports Physicals – Tuesday, Aug 7 beginning at 4:00pm in the ROC for ALL students planning on playing sports this year.  Students unable to make it at this time are required to make arrangements with their own doctor to have a sports physical.  Students MUST have a physical before they will be allowed to play.

Sports meeting for parents – Tuesday, Aug 7 at 5:30 for parents of students wishing to play sports this year.

School supplies lists are at WalMart & Kmart.

New student orientation meeting – Aug 23 at 7:00pm

Writing workshop for teachers & parents – Lou Paul will be teaching a writing workshop Aug 22 at 1:30pm for all parents and teachers interested in learning what a “web” is and how to write a well constructed paper.

Math choices letter for grades 7 – 9 – The Academic Committee will be sending out a letter within the next few days asking parents what math course they prefer their students to take.  Please respond to this letter quickly as we will need to order books as soon as possible.

Talent Show – The Student Council will be hosting the first annual Talent Show on Oct 20.  Parents, teachers, and students are encouraged to share their God given gifts for this fund raiser.  If you are interested please call Hannah Young at 829-1599.

School Board Meeting – Aug 20 at 7:00pm in the ROC.

There is one last area that I need to discuss.  There is an ACS Family that is struggling this year and are unable to afford to send all their children to Applewood.  At this time ACS does not have a school scholarship program to offer this family.  In the past we have relied on the generosity of the ACS community to meet the needs of our own.  If you know someone who would be willing to put money into a monthly scholarship fund for our families in need please contact our school board treasurer Jon Church at 829-1199.

See you at the Kick-Off Aug 30!

  • Week Of April 23 - 27

    Dear ACS Families,

As you may know we are losing 6 teachers this next year.  A couple of them are leaving because what they earn at ACS is just not enough to take care of the needs of their families.

The average pay of a teacher is $7.00/hr for the time that they are teaching their classes.  They are not paid for the time they are in their classrooms prepping for the day; they are not paid for staying after school an extra two hours every other week for teacher meetings; they are not paid for phone time with parents or students; they are not paid for time they spend helping their students outside of class; and they are not paid for the time outside of school that they work on their classes.  On an average it takes about 3 hrs of studying, writing tests, correcting homework, and calculating grades for every hour spent in the classroom.

At the last Board meeting concerned teachers and parents discussed with the board their desire to see teacher salaries increased.  It has always been the intent of the School board that Applewood be affordable for every family seeking Christian education for their children.  The board is working on the budget for next year.  Even with cutting other areas down to the barest of necessities, it looks like we will need to be cut two teacher slots.  Not only do we not have the ability to increase teacher salaries but the work load for present teachers will go up due to the need to combine classes.  The board has considered fund raising, the limitations of raising tuition, scholarships, and sponsoring.

What to do?  Knowing that this is a question with no easy answers, the Board felt they needed to seek God’s face as a corporate group.  Jesus Christ is the head of Applewood Christian School and we desire to follow His will.

    “Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

    Look to the LORD and his strength;
           seek his face always.”

    Psalm 105:3 – 4

All parents are asked to join with the Board and the Staff for a night of prayer on Monday, May 7 at 7:00pm in the Sanctuary.  Please bring your high school students, alumni, grandparents, and invite friends from your churches who are prayer warriors to earnestly help us as we seek God’s face to decide where ACS needs to go from here.  As Christians we know how powerful prayer is …

“For where two or three come together in my name,

there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20

                                                                                                                      . . . Please join us!

    Announcements:

    Mid terms come out Friday.

Friday is the last day for seniors.  They will be getting out at lunch for parents who would like to see us send them off.

  • Week of April 16 - 20

    Parents,

    Here is the latest!

Tomorrow is the annual Easter egg hunt!  If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to send in one dozen filled plastic eggs for each student (gr. K – 12).  Also, if little sister or brother is planning on participating, send in a dozen for them as well.  Please mark the plastic bag with your child’s name so that we can keep track.  You may fill the eggs with candy, erasers, balls, or other small toys.  Please do not fill the eggs with money!  Students may bring in their own basket to hunt with or we will have bags on hand for them.  Parents are always welcome to come and help us hide eggs and watch the festivities. (We will begin hiding around 10:30).  The hunt will take place during lunch recess.  Teachers, this may interrupt the class right after lunch.

Yearbooks will be going out to the students on tomorrow, April 16.  Only students that have paid will receive their book.  Cost of the books is $17.00 and there is still a few available for purchase.  Call Gay Otten for questions.

Sheri Austin is still interested in getting ACS moms to pray together every third Monday. Please call if you are interested.  Younger kids are welcome.

Mr. Sam Nelson, David DeMasters (gr 11) and Isaiah Otten (gr 8) had a very successful mission trip to Mississippi during Easter break.  They will be sharing with the students about their trip during bible class this Wednesday.  Parents are welcome to come and listen too.

Don’t forget that the ACS Family Club will be holding a Yard Sale Saturday, May 18.  We have been storing your donations at RCA Mini Storage, 315 E. Seventeenth St.  It is located two blocks east of Ohio behind car wash, #D25.  If you have donations that you would like to get out of your house, Gay Hiller will be at the storage unit the next two Thursdays from 1:00 – 2:00 to take donations.  If those times do not work for you please contact Gay at 619-7581 to make alternate arrangements.

The next Family Club Meeting April 30 at 6:00 pm in the Green room.

  • Week of April 11 - 13

    Applewood Family,

I hope you have all enjoyed a restful vacation and had a blessed Resurrection Day!

Last week the students went home with a paper letting you know that we had not forgotten about the annual Easter egg hunt.  It has been postponed until Monday, April 16.  Many of our students will be gone this Friday for a ACSI math competition and we did not want them to miss this event.  This week, please be sure to send in one dozen filled plastic eggs for each student (gr.

Testing went very well last week and we are looking forward to the test results coming in before school is out.  Keep your eye on the bulletin for a parent meeting to discuss the results of your child’s test scores.

Please be sure that your student has passed in their hot lunch order to the office by tomorrow.

Yearbooks will be going out to the students on Monday, April 16, so that each student has a chance to get the seniors to sign their book before their last day, April 27.

With only 6 weeks left of school, there is still much left to do but this is the hardest time of the year to keep students focused on their studies.  Parents, please help your students stay on task as the weather gets nicer and we all want to just go outside and play.

    Yours in Christ,

    Pam

  • Week of April 2 - 4

    Hi Parents!

This should be an easy week with no homework as we will be testing Monday – Wednesday.  Please be sure to have your student to school by 8:15 as the tests will start promptly at 8:30.  Please review the information in the bulletin entitled “testing”.

I was blessed to attend the Annual Literacy Tea & Auction today where our own Mrs. Noland was speaking.  What a wonderful job she did speaking on writing pottery and then read some of her poems to us.  ACS students are blessed to have such talented teachers!

I’d like to ask for your prayers as a trio from ACS spends their Easter break on the road ministering to people in Arkansas and Mississippi.  One of out teachers, Mr. Sam Nelson, David DeMasters (gr 11) and Isaiah Otten (gr 8) will be hitting the road right after testing this Wednesday and heading down to MS where they will be building homes for people who are still trying to put their lives together from the flood.  Along the way, they plan on sharing Christ with others through their music.

  • Week of March 19 - 23

    Hello to ACS Families,

We have some sad news to report.  Dr. Dan Balber passed away last week.  He was our drama teacher last year and was loved by the students.  As you may have known, he had a heart attack last spring, was in a coma for many weeks, but miraculously came back around.  I am taking a group of the ninth graders with me to attend his funeral tomorrow at 3:00pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City.   The school is also sending flowers.  He will be missed.

There will be a School board meeting tomorrow at 7:00pm.  Parents are always welcome.  The following is the agenda for the meeting:

    ·        Computer policy Update

    ·        Student college course enrollment policy

    ·        Senior trip update

    ·        Vote to approve grammatical changes on bylaws

    ·        Pam submit teacher/ student intentions for 07-08

    ·        Lease agreement has begun for the next school year.

Spring Sports Awards Night will be Friday, March 17 at 6:30pm.  Athletes are asked to bring a dessert to share.  Parents, be sure that your child has turned in all uniforms and outstanding money (fees, coaches gifts, t-shirts, etc.) by that evening.

An information sheet (red) went home inviting ages 2 -10 to a Character Breakfast at Smithton March 24 from 8:30 – 11:00 am.

This year we are trying something new with our testing schedule.  Instead of having testing at the end of the school year, we have decided to move it up to the week before Easter.  One of the biggest reasons for this was to get the results back before the end of the school year.  Dates are as follows:

            March 29          grades 3, 7, & 9                 Cognitive testing

            April 2              grades K – 11

            April 3              grades K – 8

            April 4              grades K – 11

Testing will be in the morning and all students will be released before lunch.  (Actual times will be announced later).  No homework will be given during this time.  Seniors will attend classes on April 2 & 4.

CPR Training will be offered on Monday, April 2 for any teachers, parents, or high school students.  Cost is $35.  Please call Mrs. Lansing for additional information.

Box Tops for Education are being collected.  The grade at the end of the school year with the most labels collected will have an Ice Cream Sunday party.

  • Note of Thanks

We would like to thank all of our ACS "family" for your prayers and support while Nathan was in the hospital last week.  The phone calls, cards, prayers and concern was tremendous!  It is a great blessing to know we are a part of a Christian family that truly knows how to show Christ to others.  Just to update you, Nathan's diagnosis was a blood disorder called, ITP.  At the present, he is healthy and cleared for all activities.  We will check his blood count again in three weeks and then in another month to see if his platelet level stays normal.  If it does stay up, then most likely this was a one time occurrence and we will be done.  Again, thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray that his blood counts will stay normal.

    In Christ,

    Jon and Debra Church
