Work for week of March 30th through April 3rd, 2020

Monday through Friday// Divide up as you need to, but allow time for your child to absorb the new concepts.

 

We are beginning our Purple Unit!  This unit is our last unit, and what your child will start on in the first grade!  There are new concepts, so please go over each one, as they will have new challenges and need extra support!  Please feel free to call me with any questions for that support, if needed.

Bossy R is our new helper in sounding out words.  His character is located in the back of the Worktext book, have your child cut him out, along with the vowels on that page, and use them as they encounter new vowel sounds.  

Worktext:  Pages 227-230, Talk about the story in the Bible, where Jesus was lost to Mary and Joseph as a boy (Luke 2:41-49) Have they ever gotten lost from their parents? Cut outs for Wortext pages are in the back of the book.

Pages:  231-232, Talk about how houses and the conveniences that we have in housing todays compare to the time of Jesus. 

Pages: 233-234,Talk about how clothing was different in the time of Jesus, compared to today, i.e., tunic, girdle, mantel, headdress, all these were worn during the time of Jesus.

Pages: 235-236, Talk about transportation in the Bible time.  By foot, horses, mules, donkeys, People only traveled when they absolutely had to because of the hardship of traveling.  (II Corinthians 11: 26-27)  People also used boats during this time,  but they were often poorly built and dangerous.  How do we have traveling better today?

 

PHONICS::   Pages 271, 273-274, 271: Poem, 273-74 "ar" word families. New word family: _ar: tar, bar, car, far jar, star  Service word for this week is "WANT".  Bossy R changes the sound of the vowel "a".  Draw something that is purple on a piece of paper, write a sentence under it to describe it.

Pages:  275-276, "ark" sounds Review some Bossy R sounds in these words: bark, dark, mark, shark, lark, spark, park, ****Remember Bossy R likes to take over and be in charge of the vowel sound. Do you see Bossy R in the word "ark"?  

Pages  277-278, "or" and "ore" word families.  New word families:  morn, born, fort, torch, fork, cork, //"ore" words---tore, wore, core, more, store, shore, chore.  Please read each of these words to your child, and ask if they hear the Bossy R in the word:  stop, chore, mop, tore, shore, store, chop, more, top, shop.

Pages:  279-280, "orn" New word family:  corn, born, horn, thorn, morn, torn 

Page:  281-282, Review of the new sounds.  Please make sure your child has this new sound concept.

WRITE NOW PAGES: 148 through 152

READING:  Please read the current book that you child is on // In addition, read the last 5 Phonic Stories for review, and word families.  When we have facetime I will be listening to all of these. Review all service words.

NUMBER SKILLS::  This week, you will working with the different skills we have had this year:  !) work on telling time, both using the analog clock, and the digital clock. Do 10 different times. Talk about a.m. and p.m. 2) Do a mixture of addition and subtraction problems, simple problems, do 15 of those and 5 story problems, verbally.  Have your child write the problem you say and the answer.  3) Review the coins from penny to quarter, there worth and be able to recognize them.  Do 5 story problems using coins.4) Have your child find 5 different shapes in your house, ask them if they are 2D or 3D.5)  Review fractions, we have talked about halves, but not about quarters or thirds.  Please help them with thee, there are some worksheets to help you in their worksheet papers.

HANDWRITING:  Pages 79-80, Gathering facts, write about an animal

Pages:  81-82, Write about a dinosaur!

Pages:  83-84, Use what you wrote about the dinosaur and retell to write a report. At least 5 sentences

Use the supplemental worksheets as needed, and please let me know when you need more, I will email to you.  Have a good week, I will be contacting each of you to listen to the progress your child is making in the reading books. stay home, and stay safe!  If there are any questions, please call or text me.
