  • Week of Feb. 19 - 23

    Hi ACS Families!

Will this snow never end!  I grew up in New Hampshire and have lived in North Dakota and Maine so I am no stranger to snow.  However, having lived the past 10 years in Missouri, I have gotten a bit spoiled.  I am anxious for the spring.

I have never been so unpopular as I have been this past week, having to cancel both the swim party and school on Valentine’s Day L  Sorry kids but safety comes first.  Well they exchanged their Valentine’s on Friday and we have rescheduled the swim party for THIS Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 11:00 – 1:00 at the Warrensburg Community Center on Gay street.   [Directions:  Hwy 50 west to Warrensburg.  Immediately after the big factory on left, take left onto Ridgeview.   Take a right onto Gay street.  The Community Center is about one half mile on your right. OR Take exit for hwy 13.  Go left on Hwy 13 or Maguire St. and drive one half mile.  Take a left on Gay street.  The Community Center is about 3 blocks down on your left.]  Students are asked to bring their swimsuits and towels if they intend on swimming (modest bathing suits please!).  Families with last names beginning with A – M please bring a sweet snack, N – Z bring a healthy snack to share. Cost is $2 per person (parents who don’t want to swim are free).  Friends and family are always welcome!

Reminder: there is no school on Monday!

    Midterms will go out Wednesday.

The Yearbook staff needs your money for your yearbooks ordered this week as they are planning to go to press soon.

  • Week of Feb. 12 - 16

    Hi ACS Families,

Valentine’s Day is a time to remind us not only of how much we love the people in our lives but more importantly how much God loves us.  It is because He loved us that we can love others.

Sheri Austin is starting a Mom’s prayer time the second Monday of every month at 10:00am at her house.  Any moms interested in getting together to pray for ACS please contact Sheri for directions to her home.

Keri Thomas has also started a prayer time for teachers.  Each morning at 8:05 Keri is leading prayer in the Green room.

School Day Off Feb. 19, President’s Day!  That means no homework on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Student Council Elections for the 2007-08 school year will be held March 28 after school.  Students in grades 8 – 11 are asked to attend.  Those interested in running for offices be prepared to speak.

Valentine’s Swim Party, Tuesday Feb. 13 from 11:00 – 1:00 at the Warrensburg Community Center on Gay street. Students will be having a modified homework load (math, grammar, and reading only) so that they can attend.  [Students not planning to attend need to see Mrs. Young for additional homework assignment.]

Valentine’s Day Cards.  Students please bring your cards in on Wednesday.  Students are not required to give everyone a Valentine.  However if the student does want to give everyone a card it is easiest if the child just signs the cards and leaves the envelope blank, that way they can drop a card into each students’ bag without having to look for specific names.

Family Club Meeting Feb. 19 at 5:00pm.

Dates for the Great Escape (social for grades 9 & 10) will be released soon but will not be Feb. 18 & 19 as indicated on the Calendar.  Mrs. Austin & Mrs. Anderson will be heading up this event.

Dates for the Winter Bash (social for grades 7 & 8) will be announced next week.  Mrs. Sparks & Mrs. Schutte will be heading up this event.

Recipe for Goo.  Last week the students made Goo with the student council ministry team.  The kids had great fun with it!  I liked it because it had very little smell and did not stick to carpet when it was dropped, nor did it collect hair and dirt, etc when it was dropped on the floor.  I thought you moms might like the recipe:  Place 1/3 cup water and 1/3 cup Elmer’s all purpose glue into a ziplock bag.  Take 1/3 cup Borax and 1/3 water and mix in cup.  Borax will settle to bottom.  Pour off extra water and then add borax to bag with other ingredients.

  • Week of Jan. 29 - Feb. 2

    Hi ACS Parents!

Sorry I was not able to get the bulletin out on Sunday, I corrected science reports until 11 pm and forgot.

The ACS Carnival was a big success!   Thanks to the Student Council and to the parents for all their hard work.  The Student Council raised $1,400 from the event!  Thanks to those 6 courageous individuals who took a pie in the face, it was a big hit again this year bringing in half of the money raised that night.

The Town Meeting went very well.  Administration and School Board were thankful for the great attendance and with the input we received.  Please hold us accountable for following up on that input.  We hope to make this an annual event.  Thanks to all the parents who attended this valuable meeting!

ACS in the News!  Just recently ACS was spotlighted twice in the Sedalia Democrat.  Wed. Jan. 24 there was coverage in the sports section about our varsity boys’ basketball team playing Lighthouse Christian Academy.  The article was accompanied by a large photo.  Then Sunday, Jan. 28 there was a feature article about sports in parochial schools.  Our varsity boys’ basketball coach, Roger Austin was interviewed and quoted.  Never before has ACS had such coverage in the newspaper!  Parents, if you have a moment, please write to the Sedalia Democrat thanking them for covering a small school such as ours and encouraging them to cover other events in the future.

Hot Lunch Orders went out yesterday.  Due to the snow day in Jan., many of you may have already paid for lunch on Feb. 7 (Pancakes & eggs).  If you did, please do not check the box and pay for the meal again.  Brian has you recorded already as paid and wanting that meal.  If you did not select that meal before and would like your child to receive it, feel free to check the block.  February lunch menu is due in the office by this Friday.

Report Cards will be going home on Wednesday Jan. 31.

Believe it or not we have gone through all the computer paper the students brought in this past fall.  Please send in a ream (packet) of white computer paper with your student this week.  Thanks for your continued help and support.

Valentine’s Party.  Once again we will be defying the weather and going swimming for the ACS Valentine’s Party on Feb. 13 from 11:00 – 1:00pm.  We will be going to the Warrensburg Community Center to swim in the pool, play basketball, eat, and fellowship.  Students with last names beginning with A – M please bring a sweet snack, N – Z bring a healthy snack to share. Cost is $2 per person (parents who don’t want to swim are free).  Friends and family are always welcome!  Students will be having a modified homework load (math, grammar, and reading only) so that they can attend.  [Students not planning to attend need to see Mrs. Young for additional homework assignment.]

Valentine’s Day Cards.  Students will go home with an updated roster Wed. so that they can write their Valentine’s cards.  (See teacher blogs for a list of teacher’s names).  Students will get a chance on Wed. Feb. 14 to “mail” their cards by putting them in each students’ bag.  Students planning to give a card to everyone in the school please separate your cards by grade in sandwich bags to make “mailing” easier.  Students are not required to give everyone a Valentine.  If the student wants to give the students in their class a card and one to a few other particular friends that is fine.  Grades K – 3 will have a chance to create their own Valentine Bag in class.  Older students can either pick up a bag from Mrs. Blake (or the office) to decorate their own or the art classes will make them for them.  We will be happy to deliver cards to coaches, team players (that aren’t at ACS), or others.

“Paying For College”, presentation being put on by Third National Bank.  Tonight, Jan. 30 at 6:30pm at the Residential Lending Center, 403 W. Broadway.

College Goal Sunday at Missouri Valley College for help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and information about the financial aid process.  Sunday, Feb. 11.  Call for more info 660-831-4171.

  • Week of Jan. 22 - 26

    Hello ACS Families!

What crazy weather we have been having lately!  Fortunately it looks like the snow is melting fast.  At this point we will be having school tomorrow.  Check the web site tomorrow morning to be sure.

We do have a couple slight complications due to the snow.  There are large slabs of ice on the roof of the ROC that are melting and sliding off the roof.  Mr. Christopherson has blocked off the main entrance to the ROC to keep everyone away from under the eaves of the roof and out of the path of these falling slabs.  So please enter the ROC from the right side door (closest to the picnic shelter).

Also, these ice slabs have knocked out the heating unit that heats the main gym area.  The classrooms will be heated but the gym will not until it is fixed.  Jr. high and high school students, please bring an extra sweatshirt just in case you are cold at lunch.

Town Meeting tomorrow night!  Parents, I can not stress enough the importance of attending this meeting.  This is your opportunity to voice concerns or suggest ideas about the future of this school and the direction it takes.  The administration and school board will be on hand to receive your input and answer questions.  Make sure your family is represented by sending at least one parent to this meeting in the Sanctuary at 7:00.  There will be childcare in the AWANA room.

Teachers, there will be no teacher meeting tomorrow due to the town meeting.  Teacher meeting will be next Monday.

ACS Carnival this Saturday from 6 – 9pm.  The carnival is a great time of fun and fellowship!  It is also a wonderful fund raiser for our student council.  (Now that the playground is up, they are working on equipment the students can use when recess is indoors.)  We will be having the Pie-In-The-Face competition, a moon walk (big bouncy thing),  the Big Boy Bash, cake walk, and other great games that the kids enjoy.  Yes, we will have live fish to win!  So come on out, bring your friends, and family for the ACS carnival!

Parents, the Pie-In-The-Face competition was a huge money maker for us last year, we raised more than $500 through that event alone!  So if your children wants to bring their piggy bank into school it is because they want to put some money down on a special friend or teacher.  Don’t forget the night of the carnival we auction off the chance to be the one to put the pie into the face of each of the top 5 “winners”.

  • No School Wednesday!

    Hi Parents & Students,

I know there are plenty of students that are sick of being house-bound and plenty of parents that would like their students to go back to school.  Unfortunately, the side walks at the school are still solid ice and it is very slippery getting to the buildings.  So the administration and school board has to decided to error on the side of being safe.

What does this mean academically?  We will not be adding to the end of the school year because of the snow days.  We are extending the end of the second quarter until this Friday.  Teachers, I need your grades in by the following Friday morning.

Teachers, please put homework for Wednesday and Thursday on your teacher blogs as soon as possible.  To get their work done the students need to get their assignments in the morning.

Parents, please check the coaches’ blogs and the calendar for any changes to the sports schedules.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding.

  • Week of January 8 - 12

    Hello to ACS Families,

v    The Family Club is having a meeting this Monday at 8:00 pm.  I encourage anyone who would like to get more involved with our school to come on out and see what this dynamic group is up to.

v    While you are doing your after Christmas cleaning, please keep in mind the ACS Yard Sale the Family Club will be holding this spring.  If you would like to get the items out of your house, contact Gay Hiller 619-7581 to arrange to drop off items at our storage unit.

v    If you haven’t attended a basketball game, Saturday would be a great day to take in a triple header:  Girls basketball, JV Boys, and Varsity Boys teams are all playing starting at 10:00am in the ROC.

v     There has been some confusion about the end of the second quarter.  When our Christmas break changed, the administration adjusted the end of the quarter accordingly but I failed to update the calendar.  The end of the second quarter is January 15.

v     Several years ago we had a meeting for ALL ACS families to attend.  It was a constructive meeting where we addressed issues like, where we would like to see ACS go in the future, and decided on the maximum size of our classes.  The School Board and Administration is interested in hosting another such Town Meeting and we would like at least one parent from each family to attend and represent your family.  Please mark your calendar for January 22 at 7:00pm.

  • Week of Jan 3 - 5

    Hello To ACS Families,

I hope your Christmas was a joyful and restful one.  I caught up on a bunch of sleep myself.  I am still working on getting out my Christmas cards though and fear that they won't be out until Valentine's Day.

Just a reminder:  No hot lunch this week!  Please be sure to pack a lunch for Wednesday.

Thanks to everyone who gave donations for the ACS Family that was in need.  The following comes from a note I received from the family.  I know all of you will be blessed, as I was, to read it.

"I want to thank you so much for all the Applewood family has done for us this year.  It's easy to accept the prayers of others but not quite as easy to accept monetary blessings.  The money that Applewood collected for us was first, quite a surprise.  However, it was just what we needed to get through Christmas.  We have truly been blessed in a way that we have never experienced!  With the prayers and gifts from our church, Applewood, and our family, God has taught me a lot about helping others.  We were in the "fall through the cracks" situation but God has met all of our needs in such an abundant way!"

    See you on Wednesday!

    Yours In Christ,

    Mrs. Young

  • Week of Dec. 11 - 15

This week will be a busy but fun-filled one!

Midterms went out Friday for grades 3 – 12.

Christmas Program practice will be on Monday & Wednesday immediately after school until 5:00.  Tuesday will be an important practice and will run from 9 – 12.  Students who will not be able to attend must have parents call Mrs. Young for permission to miss it.  Homework for grades K – 8 will be modified due to practice.  English and reading will be the only subjects given for Tuesday.  Science, history and math will be given for Thursday.  I have advised teachers to assign the homework for the week on Monday and have it due for Friday, that way students can accomplish their work as it works into their schedule.

    Christmas Program

Thursday at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary we will have our Christmas Program.  Grades K – 8 are required to be there at 6:00pm.  Grades 9 – 12 are highly encouraged to attend.  Families and friends are welcome!  Each family is asked to bring in a plate of cookies or brownies to share for the fellowship time immediately following in the Awana room.  The Family Club will be providing drinks.

Teachers will be finishing up sections and projects this week.  Be sure to get your work turned in and study for your tests.

    Gift Exchange

Students picked names the week of Thanksgiving.  If the student has forgotten who they picked please ask their morning teacher (gr. K -5) or Mrs. Young (gr. 6 – 12).  Parents, please be sure your student stays within the monetary limit set for their grade.

            K – 5         $5

            6 – 8                 $7

            9 – 12       $10

    Please bring gifts in Wednesday.

    Charity Donation

As in past years, ACS will be either adopting a family or giving to a worthwhile charity for Christmas.  (Teachers will be choosing which tomorrow at their teacher meeting). Parents are encouraged to donate to this fund instead of teacher gifts.  Students are welcome to donate as well.

    Friday

Friday will be a day of finishing up work and lots of fun.  Students will be released at 12:00 following clean up.

Each family is asked to bring in a snack to share that day.  Snacks will be divided up between the two buildings and will be available for the students to eat throughout the day.  Families with last name beginning A – M please bring in a sweet snack (cookies, brownies, cake); last names with letters N – Y please bring in a healthy snack (fruit, vegetables & dip, cheese & crackers).

Room mothers will have crafts or games for the students to do/play that day.  Parents who would like to stay for the morning and help out, see Mrs. Young, Mrs. Ream, or Mr. White so we know that you are available to help.

    Christmas Cards for the Airman

Last Wednesday, 950 dozen cookies were received from families at Whiteman AFB and sent out to the 530 airman stationed at Whiteman and living in the dorms.  For many young people, it was their first Christmas away from home.  ACS was one of 3 schools asked by the base leadership to draw cards for the airman to send inside their cookie packages.  ACS made 220 of the 650 cards that came in!  Base leadership was impressed by the messages of love and faith that the students sent.  Be sure to check the bulletin boards to see the articles.

  • Week Of Nov. 20 - 22

    Hi Parents!

This is a short week for us.  Wednesday Nov.  22nd we will be celebrating Thanksgiving together with the Annual ACS Thanksgiving Feast.  We invite parents, grandparents, family, and friends to join us at 11:30pm for a few performances from different grades and of course the feast cooked by our own students.  We are still looking for a few moms to cook a turkey on Tuesday and bring it in for Wednesday.  If you can help us in this area, please call Paula Crosier at 826-3747.  Immediately following dinner, students will be required to do their normal clean up jobs and will be dismissed following clean-up.  There is no homework the rest of the week and NO SCHOOL on Friday.

Room Moms:  The following are my room moms helping with the Feast.  I still need one more in Junior and Senior High.

              Kindergarten (7) - Mrs. Triplett

              1st /2nd          (9) – Mrs. Warda

              3rd                (6) – Mrs. Cormican

              4th /5th          (9) – Mrs. Cloud

              6th – 8th        (16) – Mrs. Hillar, Mrs.  ___________

              9th – 12th       (25) – Mrs. Austin, Mrs. DeMasters,  Mrs. __________

You will need to provide games and/or crafts to entertain the students.  Please be sure to allow time for the following:  cooking;  coloring a picture for the airmen at Whiteman AFB (this will be set up in the ROC);  decorating the tables.  I will have a schedule for you by Monday.

    Announcements:

The Family Club and School Board Meeting minutes are posted on bulletin boards in both buildings.

If anyone has an extra microwave that they could donate to the school, we could really use one in the ROC.

Students will be picking names for the Christmas gift exchange on Monday.  Students, we are to keep our exchange friend a secret so no telling!   Parents, please help your students stay within the monetary limits we have set: Elementary $5.00, Junior High $7.00, Senior High $10.00.

We are taking orders for Applewood T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, beanies, sweatpants, and canvas bags.  Please get an order form in the office.  We will have a table at the Feast for you to order or turn in forms.  This will be the last chance to order!

  • Week of Nov. 13 - 17

    Announcements:

Parent - Teacher Conferences Monday!  Parents, the way we do parent-teacher conferences is a bit different and goes as follows:  The doors open at 6:00pm but if you can't make it right on time come when you can.  Parents will pick up a copy of their student's schedule (so you will know which teachers they have) as well as their report card at the door of the ROC.  Teachers will be seated at tables (with name signs) situated around the edge of the gym.  As you see one of your student's teachers available (no one sitting at their table), please feel free to take a seat.  As you wait for each teacher to become available, be sure to get to know some of the parents that you have not met.

School Board Meeting immediately following Parent-Teacher Conferences.  If you have not made it to a school board meeting yet, this might be a good time.  All are welcome.

Christmas Program Dec. 14th.  This year our Drama and Music teachers are getting together to put on a production to celebrate the holiday season.  More information to follow.

Wear Coats!  Parents, be sure to send your child with a coat every day to school.  If it is not raining or muddy, we will go out for recess.  It's important for students to run around in the fresh air so the lunch recess teacher will bring them outside.  Students will not be allowed to stay inside as there is no one to supervise them.  Be sure to label all coats, hats, mittens, etc. as they get misplaced easily.

American History Essay Contest sponsored by Daughter's of the Amercian Revolution open to students grades 9 -12.  For details, see Mr. White.
