Bulletin

  • Week of November 6 - 10

    Hello Parents,

Last Wednesday marked the end of our first quarter.    Administrators and teachers are looking forward to Parent - Teacher Conferences (next Monday, Nov. 13th at 6:00 pm in the ROC) and the chance to share with all of you how well your students have been doing.  Report cards will be given to parents as they walk in the door.  Their will also be an opportunity to order Applewood Wear (t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.).

Our fund raiser went very well thanks to the hard work of Mrs. Wadley, the Family Club moms, and of course the students who went out to sell.  We were able to raise more than $4,300 which will cover the teacher salaries deficit!  What a relief to know that we will be able to pay our fine teachers until the end of the year!  Again thanks to everyone who worked so hard.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner!  We have already begun to make plans for the ACS Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 22.  An attendance survey will be going out this week to try to get an estimate of the amount of people we can expect so we can plan for the amount of food needed.  Parents, siblings, grandparents, friends are all welcome to attend :)  I would like to meet with all Room Moms this Friday at 2:00 upstairs in the CEL (in the room next to the 4th grade room) to discuss the Feast and the Christmas Party.

    ANNOUCEMENTS:

Picture Day this Wednesday!  Siblings are welcome to have their pictures taken as well.  Please have your students bring in the forms filled out and a check attached.  All checks should be made out to J. E. Greer Photography.

Family Club Meeting - Monday, Nov. 6th at 5:00 pm.

Start collecting your unwanted items for the ACS Family Club end of the school year Garage Sale.  We will start accepting items the week after Christmas and have several collection days scheduled.  For further info contact:  Gay Hiller 826-7580.

  • Fund Raiser Updates

    Parents,

The fund raiser is doing well so far.  26 students have sold items so far.  Some of our students sold their 10 items in the first week.  11 happy elementary students went home with stuffed animals, 4 junior high students will get to enjoy pizza for lunch on Monday, and 6 lucky high school students will be brought off campus for lunch.

Our first week the kids sold $3,300 which means they have raised $1,650 for our school!

Don't slow down now!  Students have until Monday, Oct. 30th to get their sales in.  There are still many prizes to earn! Friday afternoon those students who sold their 10 items in the second week will recieve candy bundles.  Also students who sold 15 items or more will get their name in a drawing for the "Big Kahuna".

All orders and money must be in by Monday morning!  No orders will be accepted after Monday!

November 1st will be Wrap Up Wednesday:  Students who have earned Stop-Drop-& Roll and Mystery Box will receive their awards then, as well the announcement of those students who earned the trip to Incred-A-Bowl.

For families whose relatives live out of town, tell your relatives to log on to www.christiancollection.com to view an online catalog of the items we are selling.

Be sure to get the money at the time of selling and make checks payable to "ACS Family Club".

Any further questions, please call Mrs. Wadley.

  • Fund Raiser Letter

This is the letter that went home with your students on Oct 16th (blue sheet of paper).

Additional Info:  For families who have out of town relatives, they can go to www.christiancollection.com and view their online catalog.

    Dear Parents,

Applewood is participating in a two week fundraiser selling gift wrap, cards, and small gifts.  It is through a corporation called Abundant Funds Ministries out of Florida.  We had our kickoff this morning (Oct. 16th) and your child may come home full of excitement at the possibilites for prizes.

We are asking that each child sell at least 10 items over the next two weeks.  We are trying to reach outside the ACS families, to our communities, for this support.  We ask that you help and encourage your child in his/her effort.  Please accompany you child if he/she goes door to door.  The children have opportunities to earn stuffed animals, candy, gift certfiicates and a trip to Incred-A-Bowl in Kansas City.  Below is a break down of incentives:

Week 1:  Oct 16-23  Early Bird special

If your child sells 10 items in the first week of the fundraiser he/she is eligible for the following prizes:  K - 5:  a stuffed animal, 6 - 8:  Pizza lunch, 9 - 12:  Off all expense lunch off campus.

Week 2: Oct 24-30  Personal Achievement

If your child sells their initial 10 items in the second week they are eligible for bundled candy prizes.  The class selling the most on Mon, Wed, and Fri will have its teacher wearing a crazy costume.

If your child sells an additional 5-10 items in the second week they are eligible for the following:

K-8:  Stop, drop, and roll:  Each child is outfitted in double-sided sticky tape.  We will scatter certificates for food, gifts, and priveleges on the floor.  The child will be given 10 seconds to roll around on the floor and try to pick up as many of these certificates as possible.

9-12:  Mystery Box:  This box will be filled with similar certificates, including a large amount gift card as well.

Additionally, the students with the highest sales will win a trip to Incred-A-Bowl for laser tag, putt putt and bowling, all expenses paid.

This fundraiser is for our school so that we do not have to raise tuition and allow us to meet payroll budget for this school year to pay our teachers.  In other words, it is to cover basic operating expenses, nothing fancy.

If you choose not to participate, please let Mrs. Young or Mr. White know.  There will be alternatives such as working at one of the sports events or just a cash donation.  We all need to do our part.  We tried to make this as fun as possible for the kids - we know it is difficult to sell stuff.  We hope we can work together for our teachers, our school, and ultimately your child - all for the glory of our Lord who so graciously helps us funds ways to help ourselves.

    In Him,

    The Family Club

  • Week of October 23 - 27

  • Week of October 16 - 20

    Parents,

Sorry there was no bulletin last week.  I spent the weekend grading papers for midterms and completely forgot about the bulletin.

We had a great time at Homecoming!  Five of our alumni returned for the festivities.  We recognized the seniors on the volleyball team and their parents.  We also dedicated the new playground.  I had the honor of cutting the ribbon on the playground with kindergarteners Tori Price and Joshua Cormican from the Class of 2019.  What a joy to see a project such as this come to completion; to hear of the many students along the way who helped us reach this goal; and the see God’s hand in it from start to finish.  Running Applewood is a lot like the playground project.  It takes many people to help in many different areas, to bring about a completed school year.  It also takes God to strengthen us and guide us as we teach your children.  Parents, don’t forget to be in prayer daily for our school and your teachers!

One more week and the  2006 volleyball and soccer seasons will be at a close.  If you have not attended a game yet, be sure to check the schedule and come on out!  Sporting events are a great time to meet the other families.  This Tuesday evening we will be recognizing the Seniors’ on the soccer team and their parents following the varsity game.  (Game times:  JV 4:00, V 5:30 at Paul Klover Field)

Tomorrow the Family Club will be kicking off a big school fund raiser (see info below).  There have been some misconceptions about where the money from the last two Family club fund raisers were going to.  Many have thought that the money was going toward teacher bonuses.  In actuality the money is going for teacher salaries.  Right now ACS is operating in the red in the area of teacher salaries, we do not have enough money to pay the teachers for the whole school year.  So I need your help!  Robyn Wadley has researched this fund raiser thoroughly and feels that it will be well worth our effort.  No one likes to fund raise, let’s be honest, but even public schools require fund raisers to fund certain activities.  Robyn will have alternate ways you can help.

The holidays are right around the corner.  I am still in need of some parent volunteers as room mothers.  If you have not volunteered for a job yet this is a great one!  Room mothers will be needed for the following events:  Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Party, and Easter egg hunt.  We would also love to have parents volunteer for one time social events.  Please check your calendar and see where you can help.

    Yours In Christ,

    Pam

    Fall Fundraiser

We will begin a 2 week fundraiser to raise money to ensure that our teachers are paid for the duration of the school year and so that we do not have to raise tuition to cover the cost of the deficit.  These are two very serious issues and makes this fund raiser VERY IMPORTANT.

We are selling gift wrap, Christmas cards, and stationary through a Christian based company.  Our fundraiser will run from Oct. 16 – 30.  We receive 50% of all sales.  We have the capability of making $5,000.00 profit based on our school size.  This fundraiser is big on motivation and you will hear your child talking about winning prizes, teachers wearing crazy costumes, and a chance to go to a fun-center in Kansas City.

Please help your child meet his/her goal of at least 10 items so that they are eligible for as many prizes as possible.  We will be charting each student’s progress on charts posted in their classrooms.  A catalog with your child’s name and an order form will go home with them Oct. 16th.  An incentive letter will also be attached to keep them motivated.

If you choose not to participate in this fundraiser, please notify me as soon as possible.  You will have other choices available as to how you can help.

We will be launching this fund raiser tomorrow morning during Opening.  Parents are welcome to stay and listen.

  • Tuesday/Thursday Homework Survey

    Parents,

Your child was handed a survey at the end of school for you to fill out.  The Academic Committee is presently making decisions effecting the homework issue and could use your help.  Please log how long it takes your child to do each of their subjects today.  If they did some of their homework in school (during study hall, extra time, etc.) count that time as well.  Repeat this process on Thursday.  Fill out the rest of the sheet.  Feel free to add any ideas you might find helpful or if you have thoughts on how much time you feel students should be spending with homework please feel free to add this to the end of the sheet (or go on to the back).  If you have any questions call me on my cell today (473-8145) as I will be off to Career Day with the 9th & 10th.

Thank you for your help with this very important issue.

  • Bulletin for Week of Oct 2 - 6

    Parents,

Your child brought home a fact sheet on lice this Friday.  We have had two students (in the same family) come down with lice.  They did have lice when attending school on Wednesday.  We ask that all parents, please check your child's head and hair during this coming week for any signs of lice.  Please refer to the fact sheet to tell the difference between lice and dandruff.  If you should find lice, please keep your child home until properly treated.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

In Bible class the Elementary students have been enjoying a trip to the edge of the Arctic.  This week we will be sending home words to both the songs they have been learning and their Bible verses they have been memorizing.  Please help them learn to memorize their verses.

The High School students have been working on helping administration with creating a code of conduct for students of Applewood Christian School.  I have been pleased at the high standards they are interested in setting for themsleves and their fellow students.

  • Bulletin for Week of September 25 - 29

    Hello Parents,

The ACS Family Directory finally went out with the students on Friday.  I am sorry it took me so long to get it to you.  You will also be able to access ACS family information through the web site.  The 2006-07 Calendar did not go out as planned as the School Board is still discussing a few dates.  Be sure to refer to the calendar on the web for specific dates, sporting events, vacation days, and academic milestones.  You will note that the Academic Committee voted to move testing week earlier in the school week for several reasons.  Here are the two most important:  we believe students will do a better job on testing as they are not in summer vacation mindframe;  we also hope to have test scores back before the end of the school year, so that we can meet with parents on areas of concern before students start summer break.

The fall sports season is almost half over already.  There are two highlights I want to mention.  The Varsity Soccer team participated in a invitational tournament last week and returned in 5th place but more importantly, the referees of the tournament voted unanimously to give them the Sportsmanship Award!  The Junior Varsity Volleyball team participated in a tournament yesterday, coming in third, but they too brought home the Sportsmanship Award!  I am so proud of our young people!  Sports isn't about whether we win or lose. but how we play the game.  Do we demonstrate Christ even in a competitive environment?

    Announcements:

Lunch Menu for October went out Friday.  Please return a menu for each child with payment by Friday, Sept 29th.  Feel free to write one check for all your students.  Please DO NOT include the lunch fee with tuition or milk money as it is a seperate fund.  Milk and tuition can be put on one check.  Also, for those students who normally don't take milk on Mon & Fri, they are welcome to purchase a milk for 0.25, bottled water 0.50, or gatorade 1.00.

See You At the Pole.  Applewood (Jr High & Sr High) has been invited to participate with Smithton this Wednesday at 7:00am at Smithton High School for a time of praise and worship.  Ron Jobe will be giving a devotion.  Parents are asked to bring their students to Smithton, stay & participate, and then bring students on to Applewood.  Students will be back in time to do our own See You At the Pole with the Elementary students.

Parents As Teachers Fall Festival - Sat. Oct 7th 10am - noon at Heber Hunt Elementary.  They will be having a Petting Zoo.  Students gr. 8-12 wanting to help with the animals and kids talk to Mrs. Ream.  They are still in need of farm animals.  If you have any animals that you could loan for the Zoo, please contact Mrs. Ream.

Parent Helpers.  There are still many parents who have not plugged into a "job" at ACS to help us meet all of our needs.  I will be doing my best to contact each family the next two weeks to find out where you might be able to help.  Below is the list of parent helpers and the parents who have agreed to fill positions.

  • Bulletin for Week Sept. 18 - 22

    Hi ACS Parents!

The school year is off to a great start!  We welcomed 12 new students, 9 new teachers, and 1 new administrator to our Applewood family.  I want to thank all of you for your patience as we train our new teachers in the way ACS works.  On an average it takes a good 3 months for students coming from another school to adjust to the Applewood way of doing things.  It doesn't take our teachers nearly that long but there is a bit of an adjustment in how much material can/should be covered in a week and how much homework should be given.  Please be in communication with your teachers!  They are interested in your input.  I am often asked:  "What is the 'normal' amount of homework?"  On an average the following grades should expect homework to take this much time:

    K: 1 hour             1st:  1.5 hrs.            2nd & 3rd: 3 hrs.            4th & 5th: 3.5 - 4 hrs.             6th - 8th gr: 4 - 5          9th - 12th gr:  6 -8 hr

Of course this is an average.  Some students take longer than others.  Some are very good at getting right down to business while others like to piddle putz the entire day.  Here are some helpful hints to get your student into the mindset of working.

    1.  Keep your student's bed time and waking time consistant (within an hour or so) on MWF and TTH.  DO NOT let them stay up late on MW and then sleep in on TTH.  The human body develops a sleep/wake pattern.  When their bed time fluxuates drastically day to day, we find that students are sluggish on school days.  I get my kids up so they are ready to work by 8:00am (normal school time).

    2.  Make them eat and get dressed for "school".  Sitting around in their pajamas does not help them get into a studying mindset.  Working at the table also helps them stay more on task.

    3.  Turn off the TV!  Distractions like the TV are just that ... distractions.

    4.  Listening to music while they study.  Hum?  That's a tough one.  My oldest told me he could study better with music, although I limited this greatly.  My younger two are distracted by music.  You know your child best.  We don't allow music in school so if you are trying to recreate an atmosphere of learning you might want to limit playing of music while doing work.

Again, please be patient as we all adjust to a new school year.  We have a great group of teachers who desire to do their very best for your child.  Help them do their job by praying for them, encouraging them, and communicating with them.

Announcements:  I plan to update the bulletin as new things come up.  Be sure to check past dates so that you don't miss anything!

Check the school calendar for lunch menu for the month.

The School Calendar and the 2006-07 Family Directory will go home Monday in your child's backpack.  The calendar dates are also incorporated on the web calendar and the web directory will be complete this week.

September 23rd - Family Dinner & Movie Night - Smithton United Methodist Church.  Movie:  Bailey's Billions:  A Hero Unleashed.  Dinner 6:00, movie 7:00.  Free admission.

We are still missing Medical Release Forms and/or Medical Emergency Data Cards for the following students:  Allcorn, Allee, Galey, Otten, Warda

Lunch Milk selection.  We are still missing milk choice from the following:  Austin, Capps, Meusborn, Muhr, Shane.  Reminder:  please pay monthly milk fee ($3.25) with tuition NOT lunch, as milk is paid by the school and not the Senior Fund.

The tickets are in for the beef raffle.  Drum roll please..............the winner is ......  Julie Robertson!  (Who?)  Mr. White's sister-in-law.   Congratulations to Julie!  Thanks to the Boatrights for donating the beef!  Thanks to all of you who sold raffle tickets!  Please pass on our thanks to those who bought tickets and did not win.  Raffle sales brought in $1,000.  The Pizza fund raiser brought in $1,100.  altogther the Family Club raised  $2,100 to go towards paying teacher salaries.

Seniors!  Please be sure to check the bulletin board in your room weekly for scholarship news.
