I still plan to do this during Zoom science.  :)  On Friday, we were each going to share our favorite joke.  We can still do this in Zoom science as well.

  • 1st grade homework for 04/06 through 04/08/2020

    Required homework:

Math: Speed drills (I will text the speed drills). Do p. 327-332.  Teach Roman numerals on p.332.  They are familiar with Roman numerals because of working with 2nd grade, but this is a new concept in their books.

    Spelling: none this week

    Handwriting: p.259-264

Spectrum Writing: Cross off p.92.  Do p. 89-91 and 93-95. Page 96 is extra writing space if you need it.  If not, you can cross off p.96. Make sure they understand the difference between fact and opinion.  Have them share some of each with you.

Reading: Read the prepositions sheet everyday.  By now they should primarily have them memorized.

Monday: have them write cl,  bl,  fl,  gl,  and pl on a piece of paper.  Say words to them that begin with each of these blends and have them circle the one that they hear to show that they are hearing these blends correctly. This does not need to be turned in with homework but is for their comprehension. We are ending our reading books today and this section has been about music.  Usually in class we would make our own instruments out of bottles filled at different heights with water and blow in them or stretch rubber bands over cardboard and make our own guitars, etc.  This is not required but it is an idea if you are looking for something extra to do. Read p.120-125 and do p. 138-139&b.

Tuesday: Read p.1-5 (new book) and do p.140&b. Talk about what an interview is.  Have them use their journal to interview someone in the family.

Wednesday:Have them write br,  cr,  dr,  fr,  gr,  and pr on a piece of paper.  Again, say words to them that begin with these blends and have them circle the blend that they hear. If there is a blend that they are struggling with, make sure to go over that one and help them to listen for the difference.  Read them the story of Miss Long and Miss Silent that I will text to you. Then explain to them that there are a few times that the 2nd vowel in a word is the one you hear (Miss Silent) instead of the usual rule of the 1st vowel being heard and the 2nd being silent.  Some examples of this are: brief, chief, thief, field, and shield. Read about pack rats and porcupines and then read "Who Has the Treasure?" and ask questions for comprehension.  I will text this to you.  They will need this story to help with their phonics work.  Read p.6-9 and do p.141&b.

    Phonics: p.265-272

    Phonics & English: p.275-282

Science: We will only have Zoom Science Class on Wednesday this week because of spring break.

    Extras: (not required)

Monday Art:  Create your own board game that you can play with your family later. Start by finding a big enough piece of cardboard to be the game board. Then decide what to call your game and how the game will be played. Decide what you have to do to win. Be creative and find or make game pieces for each member of your family. Have fun! My kids used to love to make their own board games. :)

Wednesday Drama: Go on a scavenger hunt. If it's nice out, you can even take your hunt outside.  :)

Have a fantastic spring break and a wonderful Easter!

  • 1st grade homework for Monday and Tuesday, 3/23 and 3/24/2020

    Required homework:

Math: p.307-310.  Remind them to use their ruler for #3 & #4 on p.307.  Make sure that they are remembering to start with the ones column (right) and working their way left on the problems in #1 on p. 308. (3 column addition is new to them.)  Read and do #2 on p. 308 together and help them use reasoning to find the answer.  Do #1 on p. 310 together.  This is the new 3 column addition with adding and carrying.

Spelling: Have them draw their own word tree and write the word families in it.  Do p. 48.  Write spelling words from p.48  3x each.  Remind them that the t is silent in the tch family but we don't want to forget it.  Remind them that the "ow" sound we hear in "shout, trout, and sprout" comes from "ou" working together.

    Spectrum Writing: p.67-68 and p.72-74

Reading: Monday- Read p. 74-78. Do p.127&b. Tuesday- Read p.79-83. Do p. 128.Go over the word cards that are sent home every week. Then have them explain what it means in their journal. Pick a short story to read to them or make up your own story to tell them. Then ask them to answer questions about the story to make sure that they were listening and retaining.   Sometimes it is good to ask a question that may be about what their opinion is or does not have a black & white answer to help them use reasoning and verbal expression skills.

    Phonics & English: p.253-256

Science: None for Monday and Tuesday. I will be sending out an email regarding science.
