Read "The Bible--Independent of All Other Books", pages 358-359.

The Greek classics studied in this unit helped to point the world to the Bible. The Greek writers were usually moral and their writings were often based upon biblical principals, but they did not know the one true God. (Their light of knowledge was just a "flickering light.") Only the Bible has stood the test of truth for all ages and truly points man to God.

UNIT 8: THE 20TH CENTURY

"The Hidden Years at Nazareth," G. Campbell Morgan, pp. 447-449

The Devotional Works (p. 447) emphasize the fact that although Christianity's influence in the 20th century is not what it was in the Victorian Era, Christian writers where still encouraging Christians. The major writers were Morgan, Jowett, Chambers and Carmichael.

Read about on page 449, his emphasis on "Truth, Clarity and Passion" in his sermons is clearly illustrated in the passage you will read today (pp. 447-449).

Read about Oswald Chambers (p. 451). His daily devotional booklet has become a Christian classic. In a world that promotes acquiring wealth as a sole reason for work, Chambers comments focus on the true reason for work: to glorify God.

Read about Amy Carmichael on page 453.

When the British took over India from the East India Company in 1558, they tried to respect the religious customs. However, two of the practices, the sacrifice of children to the river gods and suttss ( the practice of burning the widow alive on her husband's dead body, were quickly outlawed.

This poem calls into question the loyalty and fervency of Christians who do not exhibit dedication in following Christ. Notice that each stanza of the poem begins and ends with a question.

Fiction writers of the modern era exhibit tendencies toward experimentation, indeterminacy of meaning and cynicism. The positive influence of writers such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and G. K. Chesterton helped tone down the others.

Before reading "The Lagoon," page through the selection and read the vocabulary at the bottom of the pages. Then read the selection. Answer questions 1-4 on page 462.

Read about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on page 471.

The selection we will read, "His Last Bow," was written during World War I; Doyle uses some facts of the war in this fictional story. The year 1914 was the beginning of the war, and August was the month England declared war on Germany, Even though it is a short story, Doyle adds a variety of specific details throughout the mystery.

Review vocabulary before you start reading. Read and answer questions at the end of the story.

3. The electromagnetic force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between objects. Thus if the distance is multiplied by 3, THE FORCE IS DIVIDED BY 9. Since the poles are opposite, IT IS AN ATTRACTIVE FORCE.

4. The electromagnetic force is directly proportional to the charge. When the first charge is doubled, the force is doubled. Since the second charge is left the same, there is no change with respect to that charge. The force varies inversely with the square of the distance between objects. Thus, if the distance is divided by 2, the force is multiplied by 4. The total change, then. is 2 x 4 = 8.

THE NEW FORCE IS 8 TIMES STRONGER THAN THE OLD ONE.

12.CONVENTIONAL CURRENT ASSUMES THAT ELECTRICITY IS THE FLOW OF POSITIVE CHARGES. We know, however, that electricity is the flow of electrons, which are negative.
